Lawmaker begs colleagues not to impeach Al-Makura

Lafia – A lawmaker in Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Alhaji Othman Bala, has appealed to members not to impeach Gov. Umaru Al-Makura, in the interest of the state.

Bala (APC, Keffi-East) said in Lafia on Friday that lawmakers should put the interest of the state above other considerations.

“The lawmakers love the state and will do all within their power to ensure peace and development of the state.

“It is on the basis of that love that I appeal to my colleagues to sheath their swords in order to move the state forward.

“No one is perfect, we should forgive some of the lapses noticed with the governor with the belief that he will learn from it in the overall interest of the state,’’ Bala said.

He emphasised the need for the members to make sacrifice, saying: “there should be no winner or loser under the circumstance but the interest of the state should be paramount’’.

The assembly on Monday resolved to serve an impeachment notice on the governor for alleged gross misconduct.

The news of the impeachment notice, however, led to protest across the state. (NAN)

Impeachment: Al-Makura has not been served notice, says Clerk

Lafia -  The Clerk, Nasarawa State House of Assembly¸ Mr Ego Maikeffi, on Tuesday confirmed that Gov. Umaru Al-Makura, had not been served the notice of impeachment.

Maikeffi told newsmen that he had made several attempts to serve the governor the notice of impeachment, but was denied access by security personnel at the gate of the government house.

He said with the development, the assembly had no option than to serve the impeachment notice through the media on Wednesday.

He said that the two days given by the assembly had elapsed.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner for Information, Hamza Elayo, said the government was yet to be served officially with the notice of impeachment.

“Until government is officially served with the notice, we cannot react,’’ Elayo said.

The assembly had on Monday resolved to serve the governor with the notice of impeachment for alleged gross misconduct.

This followed a motion of urgent public importance raised by the Deputy Majority Leader,  Mr Yahaya Usman (PDP-Umaisha/Ugya) and seconded by Mohammed Okpede (PDP-Doma North) at plenary.

Usman presented a document containing allegations of gross misconduct against the governor, which he said, was signed by 20 of the 24 members of assembly.

“I am raising a motion under the matter of public interest.

“The document I have in my hand is a notice of impeachment of Gov.Tanko Al-Makura of Nasarawa State for gross misconduct and for the violation of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended.

“Today being the 14th July, 2014, 20 members of the 24 members of this house unanimously endorsed to serve Gov.Tanko Al-Makura notice of impeachment,’’ Usman said.

Speaker, Musa Ahmed, (PDP-Nasarawa Central) then directed the clerk of the house to serve the notice of impeachment to the governor immediately.

Ahmed said in the event that the governor could not be served within two days, the governor would be served through the media. (NAN)
