Management reduced me to tears – Ryan Giggs

Manchester United’s new assistant manager Ryan Giggs has admitted that he burst into tears after the final game of his stint as interim manager last season.

Giggs, 40, took charge of the first team for the last four matches of the campaign after David Moyes was sacked and will work under incoming manager Louis van Gaal from next season.

Ryan Giggs: is Manchester United most decorated player

The Welshman, who recently announced his retirement as a player, said that the emotion of managing the team caught up with him after they drew 1-1 at Southampton on the final day of the Premier League season.

“We got off the plane at Manchester Airport and I was saying goodbye to the players, thanking them and potentially saying goodbye to a lot of players for the last time,” he said in a documentary due to be broadcast on ITV on Thursday.

“I’m not an emotional man — well, I didn’t think I was — but my car was parked right outside and I thought, ‘I need to get in my car here.’ I could feel myself getting emotional.

“So I get in my car and I just started crying, started getting really emotional and I think it was just a mixture of what I’ve just said, saying goodbye to people for maybe the last time and the pressure that I put myself under.

“I come out the airport at the lights and (United coach and former team-mate) Nicky Butt just pulled up next to me and I’m thinking, ‘I can’t let Butty know that I’ve just been crying.’ So I just give him a little wave and looked the other way and waited for the lights to go green.

“It sounds stupid now but it’s just not me, it’s just not me at all. Driving home from the airport was a release.

“It was a sort of strange feeling, knowing that I didn’t have to come in tomorrow and that it’s a new beginning and it’s exciting. For the first time in my career, it’s going into what is going to be a different season, a different summer.”

Giggs said that his experience in the Old Trafford dug-out would stand him in good stead for his own future career as a manager and expressed enthusiasm about working alongside current Netherlands coach Van Gaal.

“I met Louis and the meeting went really well. I liked him instantly and I’m looking forward to working with him and learning from him,” Giggs said.

“It’s been a whirlwind and I wouldn’t change it for the world. It was just a brilliant experience and one that I thoroughly enjoyed and will be all the better for next time it happens.”

While Giggs admitted to harbouring some regrets about his final season as a player, he said that he had jumped at the chance to become interim manager.

“It’s been a difficult year, playing-wise,” said Giggs, who made a record 963 appearances for United. “(I’ve) not enjoyed the results and the playing, so have I contributed? Not as much as I have done previously.

“If I’d have retired last year I’d have gone out on a high: it was the 20th (league) title and everything would have been rosy, but life isn’t like that.”

He added: “I took the manager’s job without hesitation, because who turns the chance of managing Manchester United down?

“For 20 years Sir Alex (Ferguson) used to say, ‘Wait until all you lot are managers and you’ll find out how hard it is to pick a team, to leave good players out,’ and I was just sat there going, ‘Yeah, yeah, yeah, whatever.’

“And it’s like having your first baby. You can prep as much as you can, but until it comes down to actually living it day in, day out, you can never prepare for it.”

Read Ryan’s letter below

“Today is a fantastic day for Manchester United. Louis van Gaal is a great appointment and let me begin by telling you how delighted I am to be working with someone of his calibre. His credentials are second to none and I’m positive the club will thrive under his leadership over the coming years.

“I would also like to take this opportunity to announce my retirement from professional football and embark upon a new and exciting chapter in my life, as assistant manager of Manchester United. I am immensely proud, honoured and fortunate to have represented the biggest club in the world 963 times and Wales 64 times. My dream was always to play for Manchester United, and although it saddens me to know I won’t be pulling on a United jersey again as a player, I have been lucky enough to have fulfilled that dream playing with some of the best players in the world, working under an incredible manager in Sir Alex Ferguson, and most of all, playing for the greatest fans in world football. I have always felt and appreciated your support.

“I want to also give a huge thanks to the backroom staff and support teams we have and have had at Manchester United over the years. I would not have achieved the success I have without your continuing dedication and commitment to creating the best environment to enable the players to thrive. I would not have won 34 trophies in my career without you. I would also like to say a special thanks to my friends and family for all your love and support.

“For me, today is a new chapter filled with many emotions – immense pride, sadness, but most of all, excitement towards the future. United fans I hope will share and echo my belief that the club, the management and owners, are doing everything they can to return this great club to where it belongs, and I hope to be there every step of the way. To the greatest fans in world football, thank you, I have loved every minute of playing for you and representing the biggest and best club in the world.

See you next season.

Tribute to Ryan

United’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward had this to say about the retiring Reds legend and new assistant manager: “Ryan Giggs has been one of the greatest players ever to wear the red shirt of Manchester United. What he has achieved will never be equalled in the English game. In the way he played, he was the embodiment of a Manchester United player – fast, skilful, entertaining and determined to win by playing exciting football. His progress from the ranks of the famous Class of ’92 to the most decorated player in this or any club’s history is down to his hard work, ability and attitude. He is at the start of an exciting new chapter in his and the club’s life but now is the right moment to reflect on the achievements of the finest British player of the last 25 years.”

Manchester United may fire manager David Moyes

Prominent Manchester United boardroom members, are no longer happy with manager David Moyes and are considering sacking the former Everton boss, according to club sources.

According to ESPN, the Glazer family owners are now more open to replacing Moyes, who has endured a torrid start to his career as United coach. And although they will continue to back the beleaguered Scot, the next week could prove to be the deal breaker. The Red Devils must overturn a two-goal deficit against Olympiakos, to qualify for the quarter-finals of th UEFA Champions League, before travelling to West Ham and then playing their fierce rivals in the Manchester derby next Tuesday.

If United fail to progress past the last 16 in Europe and perform badly in the next two league games, it might force the Glazers’ hands. Old Trafford sources also claim that Moyes’ predecessor, Sir Alex Ferguson, no longer backs his fellow Scot as vocally as before at boardroom level but it is believed that Bobby Charlton is still firmly behind the 50-year-old.

Although plans have already been made to cope financially, if the club fails to qualify for next season’s Champions League, the board is also nervous about sponsors complaining about being linked with failure. (0)
