Five injured as hoodlums harassed Ladipo market traders for not voting Jimi Agbaje

LAGOS—No fewer than five persons were injured as two groups of traders in Ladipo Market clashed over the just-concluded governorship election in Lagos State.

It was gathered that a vice chairman of an automobile association allegedly led a group of armed hoodlums to harass traders and passers-by.

The traders called on Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Kayode Aderanti, to come to their rescue as their lives were under threat for refusing to support the candidate of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Mr. Christopher Nzeribe, a trader, said: “They have told us that they would make the market uncomfortable for those of us that did not support the PDP governorship candidate in Lagos State.

“We urged the state government to call the executives of the market to order, because majority of us who were traders in the market were only looking for our daily bread.”

Another trader, who simply identified himself as Okafor, said: “Before the 2015 general elections, there was peace and harmony among the traders in the market. The executives of the market have been intimidating and harassing us for supporting the candidate of All Progressives Congress, APC, since after the election. We cannot trade and walk freely in the market any more.

“Five traders are lying critically ill at a private hospital receiving treatment for the injury they sustained from the attacked unleashed on them by the hoodlums of the executives.”

A woman that sells drinks, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said: “What I am witnessing as a trader in the market is becoming unbearable as all my assorted drinks were carted away by the hoodlums loyal to the central market executives.”

When Vanguard visited the market, Policemen from Alakara Division and OP-MESA were on ground to prevent further breakdown of law and order.

When the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Kenneth Nwsosu, was contacted on the incident, he promised to call back. At press time, he had not called.

Hoodlums attack church, flog Pastor, members

Akure — HOODLUMS, weekend, invaded a church in Akure, Ondo State, during service and reportedly flogged the presiding Pastor and members of the church.

Meanwhile, the police in the state have arrested some of the hoodlums but they were later rescued by a mob, during which a policeman was stabbed with broken bottle on the neck.

Also, property of the church were destroyed by the hoodlums, who arrived the church on a motorcycle.

Property said to have been destroyed include plastic chairs, wall clock, window glasses and electrical appliances.

They reportedly inflicted injuries on the Pastor and members who were at the service.

Vanguard gathered that the hoodlums arrived the CAC, Pillar of Fire located around LA Primary School, Akure and dealt with the Pastor known as Pastor Arije.

Police sources said they were still investigating the incident, but Vanguard learned that a rival Pastor of one of the churches within the area might have sponsored the attack.

The hoodlums reportedly carted away the offerings for the day.

It was gathered that by the time the Policemen arrived the scene, the hoodlums had wreaked havoc on the church, but were chased to Odopetu in Oke Aro, where some of them were apprehended.

However, the hoodlums reportedly regrouped and rescued their colleague from the custody of the police. It was during their rescue mission that a policeman was reportedly stabbed by the hoodlums.

Contacted, the police spokesperson, Mr Wole Ogodo confirmed the incident, saying the Pastor reported the incident at the Divisional Police Station, Akure.

Hoodlums attack Enugu Government House, 1 killed, 3 arrested

Hoodlums in the wee hours of Saturday attacked the Government House, Enugu.

Vigilant security personnel at the popular Lion Building however repelled the attackers. One was shot dead while three were arrested.

Eye witnesses said it would have been a bloody scene had the hoodlums come with guns.

The motive behind the attack was not known at press time  but there were speculations that they were thugs loyal to a top politician in the state.

“The invasion is not unconnected with the refusal of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party in the state to allow the readmission of some discredited politicians into the party,” said a government house source.

Confirming the incident Chukwudi Achife, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Sullivan Chime said the attack occurred at about 4.30 am “when a group of young men numbering about 50 and carrying machetes and cutlasses invaded the Government House and tried to force their way in.”

“The attackers were immediately engaged by the security personnel who shot dead one person and arrested three,” Achife stated.

He disclosed that one security personnel was injured in the attack.

Achife added that the arrested persons along with some of the weapons recovered (machetes) have since been handed over to the Enugu Police Command for further investigations.

Police spokesman in Enugu, Ebere Amaraizu said the matter was being investigated. (0)

Hoodlums kidnap 4-year-old boy in Calabar

Kidnappers have kidnapped a child of 4 years old at about 8:30pm in an Audi car with concealed car registration number at the Ekorinim Axis of Calabar, Cross Rivers State.

The child, Effiong Edet was kidnapped on Wednesday at the time the local vigilante group who are football lovers were occupied with the match Arsenal against Tukrish football club in the on-going European league.

The kidnappers specializes in abducting children in Kindergarten and nursery school age, took the little child while playing with his friends in Mr. Edit’s compound.

The gang stormed Ikot Onim in search of victims and then sighted the little boy while the mother was selling friend yam nearby.

According to a source, Effiong was not the first victim on that day, the hoodlum attempted to kidnap a six year old boy called Joseph, who resisted by crying and biting one of the kidnappers causing them to abandon him before kidnapping the 4-years old boy and sped off.

Since most able bodied residents of the area were busy watching the football match, there was no one to go after the kidnappers. “By the time we got to hear what had happened, the boys had gone far and besides, there was no available car to go after them.”, the father of the kidnapped boy said.

The matter, the father said was immediately   reported at State Housing Police Station, Calabar where the police demanded for the photograph of the 4-year old child to enable them carry   out investigations, assuring Mr. Edet and his wife that the perpetrators will soon be apprehended.

At press time, no ransom had been demanded just as family sources said no contact had been established with the suspects.

When contacted, the state Polic   Public Relations Officer, Mr. Hogan Bassey said the police authorities were working to rescue the victim without any ransom paid, as Junior’s father was a worker earning just N6, 000 per month as security man.
