Boko Haram New Video: Abubakar Shekau threatens to attack Sanusi Lamido

Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau, has threatened to attack the Emir of Kano, Muhummadu Sanusi II, in retaliation for the Emir’s call on Kano residents and other Nigerians to arm and defend themselves against the terror organization.

Emir Sanusi Lamido Emir Sanusi Lamido

In a new video released weekend, Mr. Shekau said his group does not consider Mr. Sanusi a true Muslim, and will attack him whenever an opportunity presents itself.

The Emir had earlier issued a call to arms after a series of deadly attacks by suspected Boko Haram militants in Kano.

Speaking at Kano’s central Mosque in October, the Emir charged the people of Kano to arm and defend themselves against the sect, which is responsible for more than 13,000 deaths.

Militants later launched a deadly assault on the Mosque on Friday, November 28, detonating multiple bombs and shooting worshippers to death.

Over 100 people died in the attack which was believed targeted at Mr. Sanusi.

The Emir, who had travelled out of Nigeria at the time, visited the Mosque on his return, and re-affirmed his vow that the Kano people will not cower in the face of Boko Haram’s threats.

In a 19-minute new video first released Saturday, Mr. Shekau did not claim responsibility for the Mosque attack.

But he said his group remains prepared to fight and kill anyone who challenges its ideology, and all non-Muslims and “fake” Muslims like the emir.

“Before I start talking to my brothers who believed in me and the religion of Allah not the religion of democracy, not that of western education, those who believed in the religion of the Quran not that of the constitution and not religion of the Emir of Kano Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, Jonathan, Obasanjo, Atiku, Babangida, Obama, Bush, Clinton, but the religion of Allah,” he said.

“Now listen to me Emir of Kano. I am talking to you and only you because of your recent utterances.

“Let me inform you now that you are late, you are should know that you are only but the King of Kano, King of Central Bank, King of money, you are only Sanusi Lamido,” he said.

Mr. Shekau denounced the Emir’s religion as religion based on constitution, idol worship and homosexuality.

“Our own government is defined as government of the Allah by the Allah and for the Allah not as you define you own government as the government of the people by the people and for the people,” he said.

Mr. Shekau said his group will fight local vigilantes and hunters, who have successfully crushed the advances of its fighters in some parts of Nigeria’s northeast.

“Emir of Kano Sanusi you are late, that our triumph is just for a period of time so you said. Even your predecessors who are renowned idol worshipers in Islamic history like ‘Abujahal’ could not succeed fighting Islam.

Yes you can say that our success is for a period of time, because you are a king of Bank and a loyal citizen of his country,” Mr. Shekau said.

The terrorist leader said his members are ready to be slaughtered and killed so they can rest in heaven.

“Because you are made the Emir of Kano that is why you got angry and was calling on the Vigilante groups and hunters to attack us. Let me tell you that the hunters and the vigilante groups will fail and you will also fail,” he said.

He condemned all other Islamic sects in the country calling them pagans.

He said the Izala, Tijjaniyya, Qadiriyya and Shiite Islamic groups are pagans and his group will continue to kill their followers.

He also condemned the government Saudi Arabia saying they will all perish in hell.

“We will kill you people, we will capture hostages and keep selling some.”

Breaking: Emir of Kano, Sanusi reconciles with Jonathan

After nearly a year of bitter relations, President Goodluck Jonathan and the Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II, met Thursday in Abuja and reconciled differences that once drove both men to the extremes of their offices.

Sanusi, a former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, was fired by the president in February after accusing the government of diverting $20 billion oil revenues.

The government denied the claim, and in turn, accused Mr. Sanusi of “financial recklessness”.

After leaving office, Mr. Sanusi was appointed the Emir of Kano in June, assuming one of the most powerful traditional stools in Nigeria.

His appointment by Kano State’s Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, a member opposition All Progressives Congress, was opposed by the presidency which ordered the emir’s office blockaded for days.

The emir reportedly initiated peace moves, and the two men met for the first time in July during the breaking of the Muslim fast, a yearly routine in which the president meets top government officials who are Muslims and other prominent Islamic leaders in the country.

Our sources say Thursday’s meeting was essentially for reconciliation between the two sides.

The emir was accompanied to the meeting by all senior members of the Kano Emirate council, while Vice President Namadi Sambo, the National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, Attorney General, Mohammed Adoke, and the Foreign Affairs Minister, Aminu Wali also attended the meeting.

Officials at the meeting say the president urged peace, and announced that he had nothing against the emir and that he had forgotten everything that happened.

In return, Mr. Sanusi also preached peace saying he too had let go of the past.

The president and the emir later met privately for about 15 minutes, according to our sources.

Mr. Sanusi and his entourage left for Kano shortly after, and were on their way to the Abuja airport at the time of this report. Emir Mohammed Sanusi ii arriving the Aso Rock Villa for a reconciliation meeting with Pres. goodluck Jonathan State House

Sanusi Lamido, Emir of Kano meets Jonathan in Aso Rock

President Goodluck Jonathan met with the immediate past governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Lamido Sanusi at the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Wednesday.

SanusiThe meeting was the first since Sanusi became the Emir of Kano.

Sanusi was one of the Northern traditional rulers, led by the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar III, who joined Jonathan in the breaking of Ramadan fast.

The former CBN governor led others in a special prayer for peace during the short event held at the President’s residence.

The President later went round to shake hands with all the traditional rulers in attendance, including Sanusi.

Speaking on behalf of the traditional rulers at the occasion, the Sultan condemned the twin bomb blasts that rocked Kaduna State on Wednesday and other terrorists attacks in the country.

Stressing that the terrorists and their sponsors have no Islamic agenda, he declared that are enemies of humanity.

The Sultan urged the President to find time in the future to meet with them so as to discuss issues of national importance.

President Jonathan, at the occasion, immediately granted the Sultan’s request.

Jonathan, in turn, urged the traditional rulers to work with his administration in order to end insurgency in the country.

He noted that the situation could have been worse if not for prayers. He therefore called for more prayers in that direction as he expressed confidence that Nigeria will overcome the challenges.

“It could have been worse than this if not for prayers. We will surely get over it. We are doing our best to ensure we end this situation and with the support of Nigerians, we shall surely overcome,” he stated.

Sanusi moves to make peace with President Jonathan

  • We doubt Sanusi’s peace moves, FG tells court

The Federal Government, yesterday, said it was still in doubt of  the sincerity of the erstwhile Governor of the Central Bank, CBN, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, to make peace with President Goodluck Jonathan.

Sanusi and Jonathan Sanusi and Jonathan

Consequently, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mohammed Bello Adoke, SAN, yesterday, told the National Industrial Court, NIC, sitting in Abuja that he was determined to pursue the legal action that was instituted against President Jonathan by the former CBN governor to its logical conclusion.

The AGF made this position of the government known to the court shortly after Sanusi who is now the Emir of Kano, notified the President of the NIC, Justice Babatunde Adejumo, of his decision to withdraw the suit challenging the powers of President Jonathan to suspend him from office as governor of the apex bank without recourse to the National Assembly.

Sanusi had in his suit, contended that only a two-third majority vote from the Senate could effectively oust a CBN governor from office, irrespective of any allegation levelled against the occupant of such position.

Though the case was originally filed before the Abuja Division of the Federal Court, it was subsequently transferred to the NIC by trial Justice Gabriel Kolawole who declined jurisdiction to entertain the matter.

Justice Kolawole in a judgment on May 20, relied on section 24(3) of the NIC Act 2006, to transfer the case on the basis that the issue bothered on employer/employee relationship.

Meantime, at the resumed sitting on the matter yesterday, Sanusi, who was   represented by three Senior Advocates of Nigeria, told the court that he had already filed a notice to discontinue further proceeding on the  suit

Addressing the court through his lead counsel Mr. Kola Awodehin, SAN, the emir of Kano, stressed that he had already served both President Jonathan and the AGF, who are the 1st and 2nd defendants in the matter, with copies of  the said notice of discontinuance. ”Our application is supported by Order 19 rule 17 of the NIC rules, and my Lord, all the parties have been duly served”, Awodehin added.

However, before Awodehin could conclude his submission, counsel to the AGF, Chief Mike Ozekhome, SAN,  told the court that although he would not object to Sanusi’s withdrawal application, he said his client, sceptic about the genuine intention of the plaintiff, was determined to continue with the matter.

Ozekhome, contended that Sanusi ought to have shown his sincerity by also withdrawing the appeal he lodged before the appeal court in Abuja which is challenging the jurisdiction of the NIC to adjudicate on the dispute between him and President Jonathan.

”My lord, as we speak today, that appeal is still pending. In fact, the plaintiff equally has another application before Justice Kolawole wherein he is seeking the stay of execution of the federal high court judgement pending the determination of his pending appeal”, Ozekhome added.

He told the court that the high court has already issued the AGF a notice to come and compile records for onward transmission to the court of appeal.

”In view of these developments, the AGF has asked me to wait for further instruction and it is that instruction that I am waiting for now”, Ozehkome told the court.

He insisted that unless Sanusi embarked on a wholistic withdrawal of all the pending legal actions he filed against the government in relation to his suspension from office,  the AGF would have no option than to go ahead with the case.

Besides, Ozehkome, informed the court that the AGF has also gone before the appeal court to challenge the powers of Justice Kolawole to transfer the case to the NIC after he had held that he lacked jurisdiction to entertain Sanusi’s suit

Presidency can’t stop Sanusi’s enthronement - Northern Elders" Forum

The Northern Elders’ Forum has condemned alleged interference by the Presidency with the enthronement of the immediate past Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mallam Lamido Sanusi, as the new Emir of Kano.

Newly crowned Emir of Kano and former Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi

The forum said it would be wrong for the Presidency to interfere in an ethno-religious tradition that is over 1000 years old.

Sanusi had succeeded Ado Bayero who died on June 6 at the age of 84 years after 50 years on the throne.

The Deputy National Chairman, NEF, Dr. Paul Unongo, alleged that the President Goodluck Jonathan administration had been hard on its critics and often rejected advice given to it. He said the President was being misled by his advisers.

He said, “Such is happening in Kano after somebody who was supposed to be the government’s enemy was chosen by the traditional people to be their emir. I saw the government reacting to a purely traditional and religious matter.

“He is a Christian president but people are pushing him to go and stop a religious and traditional leader. I don’t think they know the meaning of an emir. An emir is both like a pope; like an archbishop and, at the same time, he has traditional powers.

“He is not like a chief in Tiv or Yorubaland or Igboland; this is the head of Islam in Kano. Kano has a history that dates back to about 1000 to 2000 years; and this people can trace their traditional rulers. How will the government stop them?”

The forum also backed the Borno State Governor, Kashim Shettima, over his stance on the insurgency by the terrorist group, Boko Haram, in the North-East.

The Presidency and the Defence Headquarters had engaged the governor in a war of words over the cause of the insurgency and superiority of firepower between the military and the insurgents.

Unongo said, “There are so many things happening in this country that I don’t understand anymore. I don t know if the Federal Government is interested in people’s ideas. The government gives the impression that it knows everything and how to solve problems. And what it needs is for everybody to shut up.”

Explain the role you, APC leaders played in emir’s imbroglio, Maku tells Kwankwaso

The Minister of Information, Mr. Labaran Maku, yesterday refuted the allegation by Governor Kwankwaso of Kano State that the President was after his life, following the violence that erupted in Kano after the selection process that led to the announcement of Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as the new emir of Kano.

Labaran Maku

The Minister described as desperate and paranoid what he called the campaign of calumny by Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso waged against the Federal Government and President Goodluck Jonathan.-

Maku said,   it was surprising why Kwankwaso has chosen to drag the name of the President and federal government into the succession crisis rocking the Kano Emirate, even when it is a known fact that the appointment of traditional rulers is within the purview of State Governments.

Instead of blaming the federal government for the crisis that greeted the appointment of the new Emir, the Minister said, the Governor should face the people of Kano and explain to them the role he and APC leaders played in the imbroglio.

“My attention has been drawn to the recent allegation by Governor   Kwankwaso that the President is after his life in the wake of the violence that erupted in Kano following the widely reported politicians of the selection process that led to the announcement of Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as the Emir of Kano.

“It is a known fact that the appointment of traditional rulers is within the purview of State Governments and it is surprising why Kwankwaso has chosen to drag the name of the President into the succession crisis rocking the Kano Emirate.  Instead of throwing tantrums and casting aspersions on imaginary enemies, Kwankwaso should face the people of Kano and explain to them the role he and APC leaders played in the imbroglio.”

He wondered why the Governor Kwankwaso decided to further blackmail federal government, even after the Police in Kano had offered explanations why their officers and men were deployed to guard the palace of the Emir.

“The recent outbursts of Kwankwaso have lent credence to observations in some quarters that the Governor is now afraid of his own shadow as the people of Kano become increasingly impatient with his years of one-man rule under which he imposes his will on the state in total disregard to the wishes of the people of Kano.

“His altercations with the late Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero shortly before the Emir’s death are a case in point.   Governor Kwankwaso has no respect for anyone, not even for the traditional institution of his own state.   After the recent denial of freedom of choice for the people of Kano by imposing local government chairmen and councillors on them, he then took on the late Kano Monarch shortly before his demise.

“Governor Kwankwaso, as is well known to the public, then went on a highly politicised selection process, turning the ascension to the throne of Kano into a partisan political enterprise during which prominent APC leaders and some Governors moved to Kano reportedly to influence the outcome,” the Minister said.

“The result is the outpouring of anger and protests in the ancient city of Kano with unfortunate breakdown of law and order.   Governor Kwankwaso is therefore singularly responsible for the violence in his state.   The selection of successors to other traditional institutions in other parts of the North in recent years has not witnessed the kind of public anger and protests and violence that greeted the exercise conducted by Kwankwaso at the Government House in Kano.

“The police authorities in the light of the violent opposition to the highly political selection process for the new Emir of Kano only helped to restore law and order and to protect the historic palace of the throne of Kano from being razed down or destroyed by irate and aggrieved people of Kano,”  he added.

“To turn round to blame President Jonathan or the Federal Government for the crisis is the height of delusion and irresponsibility on the part of Governor Kwankwaso.   He is the architect of the crisis and violence and if he has a conscience, he should examine his role in this entire unfortunate and needless crisis he has plunged the ancient city of Kano and its respected traditional institution into in recent weeks.”

“The latest claim by Governor Kwankwaso is wild and outlandish and does not fit into the character of President Jonathan or the Federal Government of Nigeria under this President.

We urge the people of Kano to remain peaceful and law abiding and shun recourse to violence in spite of the highhandedness of Governor Kwankwaso and his associates.

Governor Kwankwaso should face the anger of his people and leave President Jonathan and the Federal Government alone,” he posited.

"I was not the best among the three candidates" - Sanusi

“I enjoin Muslims to draw my attention to whatever wrong I have committed, for I know that to err is human, but to forgive is God’s”

By Ehi Ekhator, Naija Center News

The new Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, who could not operate from his palace due to the protest that greeted his emergence, returned to the palace yesterday after seven days.

Sanusi who was appointed by the Kano State Government was greeted by the mammoth crowed of well wishers, Royal guards and heavily armed policemen who escorted him into the palace.

Policemen ended their five days siege on the palace on Thursday night.

Though after days, Police boss have refused to explain to the people of Kano and Nigeria why they took over the new Emir’s place.

The new emir left the Government’s house, from where he has been operating at about 3.3opm after he led the Juma’at prayer at the state House.

The Emir, also while at the palace, conducted late evening prayers (Asr prayer) inside the palace mosque and was welcomed by hundreds of jubilant.

Sanusi, covered in white, drove into the palace in his Emir official car though the new gate that was erected for him according to tradition.

Sanusi: Police ends siege to Kano palace

The police on Thursday ended their four-day siege to the palatial official residence of the traditional ruler of Kano Emirate.

The police had on Monday deployed   armed officers and men in the palace following   a series of protests by some youths   who kicked against the appointment of a former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mallam Lamido Sanusi, as the new Emir of Kano.

Rabiu Kwankwaso Rabiu Kwankwaso

The PUNCH gathered on Thursday that following the end of the siege, preparations were   being put in place to ensure that   Sanusi, who had been ruling Kano from the state Government House since Monday, relocated to the palace.

Confirming the development, the   Director of Press and Public Relations to Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, Baba Dantiye, told one of our correspondents on the telephone, that Sanusi would move into the place within the next few days.

“I just got the information that the police have left the palace. Preparations will now start to ensure that the emir relocates to the palace,” he said.

But Dantiye noted that since   policemen had also been   withdrawn from the Government House, Kano youths had taken over the responsibility of guarding the place.

“Patriotic young men are guarding the Government House now as a result of the withdrawal of policemen by the federal authorities,” Dantiye wrote in a post on his Facebook page on Thursday.

Sanusi is expected to lead the 7th day Fidau prayers for the late Emir, Ado Bayero, on Friday (today) by 12 noon.

It was gathered that the new traditional ruler will subsequently lead Muslim faithful in Kano during the Friday Jumat prayers.

The new Emir on Thursday received the leader of Tijjaniyya sect in Africa, Khalifa Sheikh Isiyaka Rabi’u,   at the Government House.

According to a message on Dantiye’s Facebook page, Rabi’u offered prayers to God to grant the new emir protection and wisdom to rule over his people.

Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party and the All Progressives Congress lawmakers   in the House of Representatives disagreed on Thursday over the allegation by Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso that President Goodluck Jonathan was behind the crisis that followed the appointment of Mallam Lamido Sanusi as the Emir of Kano.

Kwankwaso, who also said Jonathan had no business in the appointment of Sanusi as an emir, said it was worrisome that he (President)   was meddling in the affairs of Kano State.

The governor had spoken during   an interview with a cross-section of journalists on Tuesday. Excerpt of the interview was posted on the Twitter handle of Kwankwaso and the Facebook page of his Director of Press and Public Realations, Baba Dantiye.

Kwankwaso had called on Nigerians and the international community to hold Jonathan liable if anything ontoward happened to him, his family and the people of his state.

“I have told my friends, and people of Kano, other Nigerians and indeed the international community to hold Jonathan responsible for whatever happens to Kwankwaso, his family or even the people of Kano State,” he had stated on Wednesday.

But, while the PDP caucus in the House said the governor was “playing politics” by making such an allegation, the APC caucus argued that the governor’s allegation called for an investigation.

The leaders of the caucuses spoke exclusively in separate telephone interviews with The PUNCH in Abuja.

The Deputy Majority Leader of the House, Mr. Leo Ogor, who spoke on behalf of the PDP caucus, described Kwankwaso’s allegation as “wild and without proof.”

Ogor noted that it was unfair of the governor to make such an “unsubstantiated allegation” in an already heated political environment.

He added, “There is nothing the PDP-led Federal Government has done to show that it is responsible for any crisis in Kano.

“He who alleges must prove. Let him bring his proof to the public and substantiate the allegation.

“This attempt to play politics with every issue just to score cheap political points is unnecessary.

According to him, were Kwankwaso to have facts, he should have gone to the police and other security agencies to make a report.

“If he has facts, let him got to the police and other security agencies to make his case. It is the responsibility of the security agencies to take it up from there,” Ogor added.

However, the Minority Leader of the House and APC caucus leader, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila, disputed Ogor’s position that the APC governor was merely playing politics.

Gbajabiamila argued that anybody raising such an allegation as did Kwankwaso must have gathered substantial evidence.

Rather than dismissing the allegation as political, he advised the PDP-led government to investigate it.

Gbajabiamila said, “Any allegation that insinuates death threat must be taken seriously.

“It is even more serious when the allegation is against the Presidency.

“We recall that former President Obasanjo once told the nation that this administration had some persons marked for death.

“This allegation by the Kano governor is something similar to what Obasanjo raised; so, it is not political at all.

“I am not saying that it is true (allegation), but it should be taken very seriously.

“I want to give the Presidency the benefit of the doubt and only hope that the allegation is not correct.

“I have not known Kwankwaso to make frivolous statements before; it is a reason to take his allegation seriously.”

Asari-Dokubo describes new Emir, Sanusi as a dog

By Ehi Ekhator, Naija Center News

Ex- Niger Delta militant and leader of the Niger Delta Peoples Volunteer Force (NDPVF) Mujahid Asari Dokubo revealed to his fans how he sees the new Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, describing him as a dog.

He posted a picture on his Facebook page with a caption “This is how i see Sanusi Lamido Sanusi”

The picture was a dog dressed like an Emir, completely in white. Asari asked, ”So a dog can become an Emir? Congratulations Rabiu Kwankwaso.”

See photo below

Asari who didn’t stop at his Facebook page, took to his twitter handled. While he congratulated the All Progressives Congress, APC, on their new Emir, he said he was wondering if the late Emir died a natural death, adding that APC people are very desperate.

APC congratulations on your new Emir,Emir of kano/APC ..
These APC peeps are so desperate I doubt if the emir had this rest naturally!

Asari-Dokubo is one of the many forces supporting President Goodluck Jonathan to run for a second term. He has threatened mayhem if Jonathan failed to secure a second term ticket in the 2015 presidential election.

Asari is one of those who believes that Sanusi Lamido, the new Emir of Kano could have a hand in the current insurgency in the country.

He has also challenged the Governor of Borno State, Kasim Shettima, accusing him of orchestrating the kidnap of the Chibok Girls. Asari has been rallying against the believe that the more than 200 girls who were kidnapped from their hostels on February 14th is real. The Ex militant had earlier called on Shettima to bring back the girls, saying it was a plan to drag the name of the President to the mud.

FG wants to kill me over Sanusi emergence as Emir - Kwankwaso

  • Four days after, protesters still Sanusi’s palace

KANO—Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso of Kano State, yesterday, raised alarm that the Federal Government was trying to harm him and his family by withdrawing a substantial number of his security aides and policemen.

Gov kwakwanso

The governor has also accused the Federal Government of sponsoring those he described as the enemies of the state to embark on violent protests across the state with a view to bringing down his administration.

Kwankwaso, who defected from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, with four other governors to the opposition All Progressives Congress, APC, last December, told journalists in Abuja that he was concerned about the current standoff in his state by agents of the Federal Government.

The governor said: “I know that they are playing a lot of games. We do not know their intention and what they are going to do next. But I have to say like all other people in this country that everybody is concerned about his/her security, otherwise our lives are in the hands of the Almighty God.

“The bottom line is that we have seen a sign that there is a level of mischief coming from other places and I want to put it on record that whatever happens to me, my family or my state, Jonathan should be held responsible.”

The governor pointed out that it was strange for the Federal Government and PDP to be unduly involved in the choice of an emir for Kano when it was the traditional duty of the four kingmakers of the state and the state governor to approve whoever they recommend.

On choice of Sanusi

According to him, the choice of the former Central Bank, CBN, Governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, became imperative following his selection as the first choice by the kingmakers, adding that his emergence had nothing to do with politics as erroneously imputed by the enemies of the state and its people.

He said: “The truth is that the more I think of the appointment of Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, the more I feel comfortable and happy because all the people who are friends to Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, the government and the good people of Kano State are very happy with his selection.

“He is qualified by all standards— Western educa-tion, Islamic education— and a proud grandson and son of an emir. He has all the qualities needed to be appointed an emir.

“I believe he is the best. The truth is that some few people may not be happy with him and they want to do everything possible to create tension and crisis in the state, but they seem to forget that crisis is not good for anybody especially leaders, because you can start it but you do not know how it will end.”

Kwankwaso accused the Presidency of using the selection of Sanusi as the new emir to witch-hunt him and the people of the state just because he was no longer in PDP.

The governor, who wondered why the Presidency and PDP did not show interest in the recent selection of the new Emir of Gombe, which is a PDP state, asked those causing trouble in his state to steer clear or be ready for the consequences of stoking avoidable violence.

Selection process

Explaining how Sanusi emerged, Kwankwasso said: “In all, six people showed interest, three were recom-mended and presented and Sanusi was on the top of the list. As a result, we picked him.

“But that is not even the issue. The governor has the right to take number one, two, three or reject all and call for a fresh list. That is the position and nobody under the law can go and dictate to the state what it should do in appointing an emir.

“The problem we are facing is that we are not in PDP because recently there was vacancy in Gombe for a new emir and nobody instigated any violence when the new emir was chosen. What they do not know is that they are the absolute minority in Kano.

I believe that what they did in Kano, following the announcement of Sanusi as the new Emir, is wrong. But the fact of the matter in my opinion is that the current President does not know where the powers of Mr. President begin and end.

“It is not the duty of PDP or the Presidency to approve the appointment of an Emir in any state and it cannot do so in Kano. But if there is the post of the Emir of Nigeria let them appoint that one and leave us alone.”

Jubilation over

Sanusi’s ‘arrest’

Meanwhile, some part of Kano erupted in celebration, Tuesday night, following rumors that the newly appointed Emir of Kano, Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, had been arrested by the police and that the Federal Government had reversed his appointment.

Thousands of youths poured into the streets by 10p.m. around the emir’s palace, Kofar Nassarawa, Mandawari, Gwale, Kofar Kudu and environs celebrating and chanting pro-Jonathan slogans for effecting the change.

The celebrations, captured live by a local radio station, lasted two hours as news of the change spread across the city.

The celebrants, who were opposed to Sanusi’s candidacy, expressed happiness over his rumoured arrest and detention by the Federal Government.

Police still in place

Meanwhile, combat ready policemen are still occupying the emir’s palace four days after Sanusi was announced as the new emir, following the death of the former Emir, Alhaji Ado Bayero.

Sanusi resumes, rules Kano from govt house

The Emir of Kano, Mallam Sanusi Lamido, has yet to move into his palace more than 24 hours after he received his appointment letter and staff of office.

As of 8.02pm on Tuesday, the palace was still under lock and key. The presence of policemen deployed there on Sunday to keep away protesting youths   was also   still noticeable.

Under normal circumstances, Sanusi would have after receiving the staff of office resumed his royal duties at the   palace   as has been the tradition for over 1,000 years.

However, due to the   security situation occasioned by the protests that followed his appointment, the royal father was said to have heeded security advice to lay low for now.

On Tuesday, he continued to perform his official functions at the Kano State Government House by receiving important visitors that included the Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole, his Imo State counterpart, Rochas Okorocha, and business mogul, Aliko Dangote.

Sanusi also received   the four   Kano kingmakers, who presented him with his traditional regalia and instrument of office ahead of his coronation .

The regalia comprises the twin spear or sword (Lagwayen masu), a Dabo hat, a pair of ostrich plumage shoes. He was also given a copy of the Holy Qur’an.

He will adorn the regalia on the day of coronation, which will be held at the emir’s palace at a date to be announced later.

The Chairman of the kingmakers and the Madakin Kano, Alhaji Yusuf   Ibrahim, did the presentation.

The items handed over to him were the same used by the 2nd Fulani Emir of Kano, Ibrahim Dabo, who was a close confidant and brother of the founder of   the Sokoto Caliphate, Usman Danfodio, in 1804.

Officials of the state government however confided in one of our correspondents that plans had reached an advanced stage to relocate the Emir to one of the Emirate’s Guest Palaces close to the   government house.

However, life is gradually returning to normal in the city as residents who were hitherto indoors have begun to go out for their business.

An early morning drizzle which lasted for a little over two hours, gave way to clear whether which encouraged business owners to open their offices.

The Public Relations Officer, Kano State Police Command,   Magaji Majia, urged parents and guardians to ensure that their children and wards did not join others to threaten the peace of the city.

“The city is calm and quiet as we have no record of security breach today,” he told journalists.

There were speculations in the city on Tuesday that President Goodluck Jonathan was due to visit the state on Tuesday to condole with the family of the late emir, Alhaji Ado Bayero.

A helicopter belonging to the Nigerian Air force hovered round   Kano for most part of the day while Armoured Personnel Carriers were stationed in strategic locations in the city.

The President will however visit Kano on Wednesday (today). (Punch)

Support FG"s war against Boko Haram - Buhari writes Sanusi Lamido

A former Head of State, who is also a national leader of the All Progressives Party, Maj-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd) on Monday wrote the new Emir of Kano, Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, asking the monarch to support the Federal Government’s war against terrorism in the country.

Buhari Buhari

Buhari, in a congratulatory letter he personally signed and a copy of which was made available to newsmen in Kaduna, urged the new emir to bring to bear his wealth of experience in assisting the economic revival of the state and the country as a whole.

The former military leader, who was also a presidential candidate of the defunct Congress of Progressive Change in the 2011 presidential election, reminded the former CBN boss to fear God and to treat the people of Kano with justice and fairness, saying his choice as the emir was purely an act of God.

Buhari said, “You should cultivate all and exclude none. After attending the burial of the late emir, Alhaji Ado Bayero, I am renewing my condolences to the new emir, Alhaji Sanusi Lamido Sanusi and the people of Kano and the country on the death of Alhaji Ado Bayero.

“I am forwarding my congratulations to you for assuming the office of emir of this historic land, a position once occupied by great historical figures such as Muhammadu Rumfa, Ibrahim Dabo, Abdullahi Bayero and Muhammadu Sanusi. I hope you will be a worthy successor to those great men.”

Jonathan cancels Kano trip as police seal off palace

President Goodluck Jonathan has shelved his planned trip to Kano following the emergence of former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as emir.

The police yesterday sealed off the palace, fueling reports of a plot by the Federal Government to stop Sanusi from ascending the throne.

Jonathan meets with AliyuSanusi got his letter of appointment and staff of office from Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso at Government House yesterday.

The President was expected to pay a condolence visit to Kano yesterday, but the trip, sources said, was cancelled on Sunday night following Sanusi’s emergence.

A source said: “The President wanted to be in Kano on Monday (yesterday) but the emergence of Sanusi and the protests that accompanied it made the President to stay away from any controversy.

“I think the President may find a more auspicious time to be in Kano. He loves the people of the state; he shares their pain on the loss of the late emir.”

It was gathered that the protest that greeted Sanusi’s choice on Sunday was instigated.

A source said one of the contestants for the stool may go to court to challenge Sanusi’s emergence. Yesterday, Sanusi waved the olive branch, urging his fellow contestants to join hands with him in running the emirate.

Some forces are pushing for the maintenance of the status quo once the dispute over the stool is in court to deny Sanusi access to the palace.

The source said: “The police have deployed some of their men in the palace to protect it for security reasons. These policemen were drafted to the palace on Sunday night after the emergence of the new Emir.

“The police said they were acting on intelligence report including the invasion of the Emir’s personal room in the palace by some people who stole some items. They said they are investigating the theft.

“There is however a strong suspicion that the policemen were brought to the place to stop Sanusi from having access to the palace following protests.

“They are under stern instruction not to allow any person, including the new Emir, from entering the palace until all issues surrounding the appointment are resolved.”

Responding to a question, the source added: “The police might have got wind of plans to go to court by some people to stop the installation of Sanusi.

“They said they expect all stakeholders to stick to the status quo.”

Findings also revealed that a tight security ring had been woven around the four kingmakers, Alhaji Yusuf Nabani (Madakin Kano); Alhaji Sarki Abdullahi (Makaman Kano); Alhaji Bello Tuta (Sarki Dawaki Mai-Tuta); and Alhaji Mukhtar Adnan (Sarki Bai).

Another source added: “Some riot policemen have been provided for the kingmakers to protect them from any harm.

“Virtually everyone is besieging the kingmakers to know what really transpired at their session on Saturday and Sunday.

“So, these kingmakers are central to the appointment of a new Emir and aftermath in Kano. This is why they are being protected.”

The plot to stop Sanusi’s installation is believed to have been hatched by some aggrieved princes and bigwigs in Kano.

A third source added: “Those aggrieved have perfected their papers which they would file a court in Kano any moment from now.”

Youths barricaded the gate of the Palace and some streets leading the to the turbaning of Alhaji Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as the new Emir of Kano yesterday.

Fierce-looking soldiers and riot policemen have been drafted to prevent the irate mob from vandalising the Palace.

Some youths said they have been there since Sunday.

“We have been sleeping here for the past two days since the announcement of Alhaji Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as the new Emir by Governor Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso’s government”, they said.

Security men blocked the gate leading to the Palace with their vehicles to prevent the protesters from entering.

Contacted on telephone, Kano State Commissioner of Police Adenrele Shinaba said: “Ours is to take control of security and that is what we are doing.”

The family of the late Emir Ado Bayero is still living inside the Palace contrary to reports that they have been relocated.

Our reporter learnt that four people may have died and several others injured during a clash between Sanusi’s supporters and those who opposed his appointment.

Both groups made bon fires on the road leading to the Emir’s palace and Kofar Nasarawa. The police put out the fire and dispersed the crowd. But they regrouped for another free-for-all.

Emir of Kano: We made innocent mistake, says PDP

The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party has said it made an innocent mistake when it issued a congratulatory statement on Sunday, in which it hailed the ‘appointment’ of Mallam Sanusi Ado Bayero, the eldest son of the late Emir, Ado Bayero as the next emir of Kano.

PDP PDP

The party was reacting to a statement issued by the Interim National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, Alhaji Lai Mohammed in which he (Mohammed) was calling for the prosecution of the spokesperson of the ruling party, Chief Olisa Metuh because of the hurriedly made congratulatory message.

Mohammed said the statement was aimed at causing crisis in Kano.

While replying Mohammed, Metuh said in a statement in Abuja on Monday, that Mohammed’s statement was inciting and misleading .

He said Mohammed was also blackmailing him and the ruling party.

Metuh said, “We are indeed shocked by this statement and wonder what sort of dirty individual that could be so unprofessional, unprincipled and unethical.

“Indeed, it appears that Lai Mohammed has gone delusional and requires urgent medical attention. Has he become a low life who can go to any extent to score a cheap political point?

“It is public knowledge that we made an innocent mistake but immediately withdrew it and tendered an unreserved apology well before the official announcement of the new emir was made.”

Metuh said that the new Emir, Mallam Sanusi Lamido also tweeted at about 8.59 am that same Sunday that Alhaji Lamido Ado Bayero had emerged as the new emir, wondering why Mohammed did not ask questions on this.

He also alleged that some electronic and print media organizations ‘broke’ the news of the emergence of Ado Bayero as emir upon which prominent Nigerians issued statements congratulating him.

Meanwhile, the party has yet to officially congratulate the new emir since his name was announced on Sunday.

Before now, the PDP has alleged that Sanusi, when he was suspended as the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, was a sympathizer of the APC.

The party went further to allege that the former CBN governor gave contracts to some bigwigs in the party.

It, however, failed to mention their names.

Amaechi locked inside Kano airport for undisclosed minutes

The Rivers State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi was locked inside the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport on Sunday for an undisclosed number of minutes before the gate was forced open.

Rivers Stae governor, Rotimi Amaechi dissolve Obio/Akpor Rivers Stae governor, Rotimi Amaechi

The State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mrs. Ibim Semenitari, who disclosed this while briefing newsmen on Monday, said all the gates leading into and out of the airport were locked apparently to prevent a take-off or landing of any aircraft.

Semenitari expressed surprise that the gates could be locked where it was clear that Amaechi was still in the aircraft.

She explained that the padlocks to the gates had to be broken to allow the Rivers State Governor, who was in company with the former Governor of Gombe State, Senator Danjuma Goje and Alhaji Kawu Baraje.

The commissioner added that Amaechi was denied take-off from the Aminu Kano Airport by a man identified as Commandant, who insisted that the order was from above.

Amaechi, according to her, was forced to travel by road from Kano to Port Harcourt after the aircraft was grounded.

“Yesterday, my counterpart in Kano told me that the people at the airport said they were directed not to allow all non-scheduled aircrafts to take off or land.

“So, while the governor was there, I am also told, they began to lock all the gates to the exit of the airport and they locked the gates with the governor inside the aircraft.

“For the governor to exit the airport, somebody had to break the padlock of the gate. So, the governor and his team could leave. That amounts to imprisonment without charge.

“I got the Commissioner for State Affairs, who briefed me and told me that the chattered aircraft that conveyed the governor to Kano, was denied take-off from Aminu Kano International Airport by a fellow identified as the Commandant, acting on orders from above.

“That was the only information he (Kano State Commissioner for State Affiars) was willing to share when the governor enquired about what offence himself and the aircraft operators had committed. With the governor was Alhaji Kawu Baraje as well as Senator Danjuma Goje, former governor of Gombe State,” Semenitari said.

Pointing out that the ordeal of the state governor, who had gone to condole with the Kano State Governor on the demise of the immediate past Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, did not portend any good for the nation’s democracy.

Describing the incident at the Kano Airport as an ‘imprisonment’ of the governor, Semenitari, said the development was a wrong signal ahead of the 2015 general elections.

Semenitari expressed surprised that an aircraft that was cleared prior to the time of arrival would not be allowed to take off with the same passengers it landed with.

The development, according to her, remains a clear indication that some people want to intimidate Nigerians ahead of the 2015 general election.

Lamido Sanusi: The wrong emir of Kano

0

By Femi Aribisala

Of all the cities in Northern Nigeria, Kano is perhaps the most important.  Although it used to be subject to the Sokoto Caliphate, in many respects it has since become a far more important city in Nigeria than Sokoto.  Kano was the administrative capital of the entire Northern Nigeria under British colonial rule.  Today, it is by far the biggest metropolis in Northern Nigeria.  It is not only the vibrant commercial capital of the region; it is a leading epicenter of economic activity in sub-Saharan Africa.

True progressives

Kano is also in many respects the most truly progressive state in Nigeria.  It has never been a follow-the-leader city.  The people of Kano have a mind of their own.  They specialize in bucking the national trend.  Kano is the city of trail-blazing Mallam Aminu Kano and the Northern Elements Progressive Union (NEPU), which later became the formidable People’s Redemption Party (PRP).  It is also the city of Maitama Sule, another one of Nigeria’s former luminaries and perhaps the most distinguished orator ever in the history of Nigerian politics.

Lamido Sanusi

For these reasons and more, the politics of Kano have far-reaching regional and national implications.  It also goes without saying that the Emir of Kano is inevitably a very influential man, not only in Kano and the North, but in Nigeria as a whole.  By virtue of his office, a lot of people look up to him.  His views go a long way to shape public opinion in the Northern part of the country and even beyond.  This makes the choice of the Emir of Kano more than a local affair.  It is a choice that must be made soberly and with great circumspection as befitting such a local office of national significance.

Lack of probity

This makes the choice of Lamido Sanusi, the disgraced former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, as the new Emir of Kano most inappropriate.  It is a choice that, wittingly or unwittingly, will bring the office of the Emir into disrepute.  It is improper that a man who still has allegations of financial improprieties hanging over his head at the national level, to which he might have to answer in the court of law, should be appointed to such an important post.  This is how Nigerian leaders show they have little or no understanding of the ethics of public office and good governance.  Lamido Sanusi has just been fired as CBN governor on allegations of corrupt practices.  How then can such a man be rewarded with the appointment of Emir of Kano before his innocence is established?

This is the Nigerian way and it is the way of ignoble and corrupt practices.  Sanusi’s appointment to such an important post could not have taken place in countries concerned about probity and transparency in public office.  His appointment confirms the allegations of our gaggle of Western traducers that Nigeria is a citadel of corruption.  It tells the world that Nigeria deserves to be one of the lowest-ranked countries on the corruption index of Transparency International; a global civil society organization that engages in comparative analysis of the levels of corruption in the countries in the world.

Case against Sanusi

Sanusi is accused by the federal government of running the accounts of the CBN like a bull in a china shop.  It is only in Nigeria that you can have a Central Bank governor spend government money as outrageously and as whimsically as Sanusi is alleged to have done.  The government reveals that Sanusi gave away nothing less than ₦163 billion in 63 unauthorised “intervention projects” in different parts of the country.  This largesse is more than the entire annual budget of a state like Edo.  He is also accused of being guilty of a number of grave financial improprieties.

Will he now get away with these corrupt practices simply because he has been appointed as Emir, or will he be prosecuted to the full extent of the law?  Your guess is as good as mine.  If the charges against him are dropped simply because of his appointment, it will be another example of Nigeria’s tendency to condone corruption.   Even the former prime minister of Israel was tried and sentenced to jail for corruption, which is what happens in those countries with zero tolerance for the improprieties of public officials.  The question now is whether the Emir of Kano is beyond the law.  Another question is whether Nigeria a real republic or no more than a banana republic?

The Emir of Kano does not have any constitutional immunity from criminal prosecution.  If Sanusi is prosecuted in spite of his appointment and found guilty, it would undoubtedly be demeaning to the office of the Emir of Kano when and if he is ignominiously sent to jail.  Indeed, he would be the first Emir to be granted such distinction in Nigeria.  While every Nigerian must be deemed innocent of all charges until proven guilty in a court of law, commonsense dictates that you do not appoint a man with criminal allegations hanging over his head into high office until he has cleared himself of those allegations in the court of law.

APC treachery

This makes the appointment of Sanusi as Emir by Governor Kwankwaso of Kano an act of deliberate mischief.  The Nigerian Senate recently declared Sanusi a liar and mischief-maker for making false allegations that a whopping 49 billion was missing from the federal accounts.  A liar and mischief-maker is not suitable for the politically-sensitive post of Emir of Kano.  Governor Kwankwaso himself was accused of being a fraudster by no less a person than Goodluck Jonathan, the President of Nigeria.  What we now have is that an alleged fraudster has appointed another alleged fraudster into high office, undermining the reputation and integrity of the important city of Kano.

Are there no protocols concerning the appointment of Emirs and Obas in Nigeria?  Certainly there must be.  Even if there is none, should propriety not tell Kwankwaso that a man facing corruption charges is not be eligible for political appointment?  Only in Nigeria does this kind of disregard for ethics and good governance hold sway.  Since this is coming from one of the new kingpins of the APC, who is even being touted by some as presidential- candidate material, what does it tell us about “fresh air” that the APC claims it will bring to Nigerian politics?  It tells us that the APC is one big charade.

Make no mistake about it: this is a political appointment.  Even more pointedly, it is an APC appointment.  Governor Kwankwaso who made this appointment is a rebel PDP Governor who recently defected to the APC.  He would not have made the appointment as a PDP governor.  This appointment was made to spite the government of Goodluck Jonathan.  But what small-minded people like Kwankwaso don’t seem to understand is that when they undermine the government of the Goodluck Jonathan, they are undermining the government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Unworthy governor

One of the allegations against Sanusi by the federal government is that he is suspected to be one of the financiers of Boko Haram.  The fact that the man is now appointed as Emir, without these allegations being ironed out, is further evidence that some Northerners are not ready to confront the issue of terrorism in the North.  If they were, a man facing terrorism-related charges by the federal government would not be the preferred choice as Emir of Kano, a city that has been attacked severally by the Boko Haram.

By this act, Kwankwaso has made himself an unworthy governor of Kano.  Only an unworthy governor would turn such a revered institution as the emirate of Kano into political football.  Kwankwaso has made the people of Kano into a laughing-stock.  Revered institutions like that of the Emir of Kano should be beyond the shenanigans of this type of political manipulation.  I have said it before and I say it again: there is nothing progressive about the APC.  This appointment of Sanusi as the new Emir of Kano is further proof.  What the APC bring to Nigeria is the same tired old-time corrupt politics that has been the bane of the country for the longest time.  The APC is one big con.

Unfortunately for Kwankwaso, he chose the wrong state to do this prank.  Kano is a highly volatile city.  The people are not going to take this appointment lightly.  Already, there have been a number of violent skirmishes since the appointment.  Kwankwaso has lighted a bush-fire whose consequences may be more than he bargained for.  You can never tell how far Kano citizens who have been brazenly disrespected by the governor will go in registering their protest.  In any case, Kwankwaso’s act is sure to backfire against the APC in Kano.  This means we have not yet heard the last of Kwankwaso’s treachery.

Questionable future

If Lamido Sanusi were wise, he should spend some time reading the tea-leaves.  Some people are already concluding that Sanusi is the new Emir by divine providence.  However, appointments as Emir or even as Sultan are no longer sacrosanct.  Mustapha Jokolo was removed as the Emir of Gwandu in 1995 and replaced by Mohammed Jega.  Ibrahim Dasuki was removed as the Sultan of Sokoto in 1996 and replaced by Muhammadu Maccido.

Therefore, this is a piece of advice for the new Emir of Kano.  Don’t bother to move your belongings into the Emir’s palace just yet.  Don’t even bother to change the curtains or the carpets for now.  You may not be on your throne for long.  Thanks to Kwankwaso, the Kano Emirate has been politicized to all effects and purposes.  Today, it is clearly in the APC camp.  But if the APC lose the governorship election in Kano in February next year, it is not improbable that the Emirate will immediately be declared as a PDP terrain.

In that case, His Royal Highness, the new Emir of Kano, might end up with the same fate that befell him as CBN Governor.  He might be summarily dismissed.

Private planes banned from landing at Kano airport

A former minister of the FCT, chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has alleged that Private planes are banned from landing at the airport in Kano to frustrate invitees who wish to congratulate Emir of kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi.

Sanusi and Jonathan Sanusi and Jonathan

El-Rufai said  ”Private planes banned from landing at the Kano Airport to frustrate those intending to fly into Kano to congratulate HRH emir Sanusi Lamido Sanusi.

”Who is in charge of the airport, is it the military airport commandant or the NCAA?

”Is Nigeria under military rule or martial law allowing the violation of constitutional rights with such impunity?

”When will the Jonathanians give up on this hopeless persecution of a good ,an?

”For how long will the Jonathanians continue to test the patience of our people and the citizens of Kano with this reckless impunity”

The throne of the Emir of Kano, unlike other Emirs have been taken over by politics as the selected candidate for the position is a strong member of the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Chaos over Sanusi selection as Kano residents took to the street

By Ehi Ekhator, Naija Center News.

It seems the selection of the Former CBN governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, did not go down well with the people of Kano State as supporters of the first son fo the Late Emir of Kano, Sanusi Ado Bayero has taken to the street to protest the rejection of their preferred candidate.

It was gathered that the protesters are burning fires around the Emirs’ palace, while another group of protesters were stopped some armed soldiers and policemen on their way to the Government House.

Secretary to the Kano state Government , Alhaji Rabi

The angry protesters were also destroying any property linked with the government.

According to the Secretary to the Government of Kano State, Rabi’u Bichi disclosed the selection of Sanusi as the new emir of kano earlier after being carefully recommended by the kingsmakers and approved by the Executive Governor of Kano State, Rabiu Kwankwaso.

Mr. Bichi further disclosed that the government chose Sanusi out of three candidate who were contending for the position.

He said “Under state customary law, the kingmakers comprising the Madaki, Sarkin Bai, Makaman and Sarkin Dawaki Maituta had sat down and forwarded three names to the government to choose the one that will succeed the Late Emir Ado Abdullahi Bayero.

“Out of these three names the government has approved Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, the Dan Majen Kano, and former Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN,  as the new emir of Kano,” the SSG said.

A source dislosed that the protesters are those who supported Ado Bayero’s son and felt shortchanged.

“Earlier in the day, message came to the Prince while he was at the palace receiving condolences that he needed to go and get set for turbanning in case he was the one selected, so, many of his supporters followed him to his private residence and most of them assumed that he must have been selected since he was getting set for turbanning,” our source said.

“Unknown to many, both nominees were required to be ready whether they will eventually be selected or not, but many misconstrued the order and were shocked when Sanusi Lamido was eventually announced and they are the ones protesting now.”
