Buhari appoints Oyo-Ita as Head of Service

President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday approved the appointment of Mrs. Winifred Oyo-Ita, as the acting Head of the Civil Service of the Federation.

A statement by the Director of Press and Public Relations in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr. Bolaji Adebiyi, said the appointment took effect from Wednesday, October 21, 2015.

Oyo-Ita was, until her appointment, the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Science and Technology.

She hails from Odukpani Local Government Area of Cross River State.

The statement described the appointment as “a testimony of Mr. President’s implicit confidence and trust” in her ability to discharge the responsibilities of the office of Head of the Civil Service of the Federation.

The Presidency had on Tuesday clarified the exit of the erstwhile Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Mr. Danladi Kifasi, which it described as “retirement.”

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Communications, Mr. Femi Adesina, made the clarification in an interview with our correspondent in Abuja, amidst speculations that the HoS was sacked.

Adesina had said, “The Head of Service is due for retirement in December and so he is proceeding on his terminal leave.”

Kifasi was appointed HoS by ex-President Goodluck Jonathan on August 13, 2014.

CALABAR – A THIRTY year old man, Richard Effiok from Akpabuyo local Government Area of Cross River State has narrated how he slashed the throat of his twenty- three year-old girl friend, Bassey Udoh, from Akwa Ibom State after a sex romp.

Richard in an interview with Vanguard on Monday at the Cross River State Police Command headquarters said he had been dating the girl for two years but she was always demanding for money from him each time they made love and on the 22nd of May , 2015, she requested for five thousand naira and what he had on him was just one thousand naira which the girl rejected and a scuffle ensued between them

“She usually comes to visit me and we make love and I do give her money but last time she came, we made love three times and after that she asked for five thousand naira but I had just one thousand naira which I gave to her and she rejected the money”

Richard who lives on Nelson Mandela Street in the heart of Calabar said when the girl rejected the money, she became infuriated and grabbed his boxers and a scuffle ensued between them in his room. “I was angry when she tore my boxers and i got hold of a kitchen knife and pierced her in the stomach and later slashed her throat and she died because of the bleeding”

He said the young lady’s scream when he stabbed her in the stomach attracted neighbours who forced the door open but before they could enter the room, he had slashed her throat and she dropped dead . ‘They could not take her to hospital since she was already dead before they entered the room so they only invited the police who arrested me and took the body the mortuary.”

Mob sets ablaze three robbery suspects in Ogoja

OGOJA- THREE Young men suspected to have robbed traders in the popular Okuku Market in Yala Local Government Area in the northern part of Cross River State were on Thursday afternoon set ablaze by a mob amidst the wailing of women who witnessed the gory scene.

The young men comprising two indigenes of the area and one from Ebonyi State were alleged to have waylaid the traders from Akwa Ibom State who throng the market every five days to buy food stuff at the markets motor park and robbed them of the money they came with to buy food stuff.

“Yesterday was Okuku market’s eve and many traders from Calabar (Akwa Ibom and Rivers) usually come here on the eve of the market so that they could buy yams and garri early before everything is bought by others, due the bad road and distance they usually sleep in the market park before the market day”. Maria Ipuole, one of the eye witnesses told Vanguard.

She said at about 7 pm on Wednesday when the bus carrying the traders arrived the park, the boys armed with locally made pistols and machetes attacked the them and dispossessed them of their money and phones killing one of them in the process.

“The death of one of the traders angered the youths of Okuku who this morning (Thursday) began a manhunt for the robbers since one of the traders recognised one of them and by afternoon they had apprehended all of them and killed them with machetes”.

Maria said one of the robbers was an indigene of Okuku, the community where the robbery took place, another from Obubu and the third from Abakaliki in Ebonyi State.

One of the angry youth said the suspects were first inflicted with machete cuts before being set ablaze in a bonfire which he claimed is to serve as a deterrent to other youths who may harbour such evil intentions.

‘Okuku market is popular all over the country and if our young men are allowed to turn the place to a robbery haven, then the market will soon die”. He told our reporter.

A source at the Divisional Police Station in Okpoma under whose jurisdiction Okuku is under said before the police could arrive the market, the mob had already set the suspects ablaze.

Mr Hogan Bassey, the spokesman of the Cross River Police Command said “We have had reports like that from the area but we can only confirm the veracity of such information when the DPO comes to brief us or sends his briefs which would be within the week and that is when I give you the details”. He Said

I won"t go for any elective office in 2015 - Cross River Governor, Imoke

Cross River State governor, Senator Liyel Imoke, has shed light on his decision not to seek any elective office in 2015.

Imoke, who spoke at a public lecture organised by Destiny Group to mark his 53rd birthday at the Cultural Centre, Calabar, said it is only leaders who feel insecure and looking for where to hide after leaving office that think of the next elective office while they are still in their current position.

“As the end of my term as governor continues to count, I look forward to it with joy and satisfaction. I will leave with peace and utmost satisfaction. A lot of people keep asking me, ‘Oga, are you not going to contest for an election when you leave as governor?’ I tell them that I will leave office with so much peace and satisfaction that I will not contemplate running for another office. It is only those who are insecure and are looking for where to hide that plot for the next office even when they are yet to serve out their current term,” he stated.

He stressed the need for leaders to build a new generation of leaders, noting, “I strongly believe that as leaders, if there is one thing we must do as a matter of deliberate policy is to build a new generation of leaders. If we keep moving from or running in one office to the other without creating opportunities for a younger or a new generation, then society will never evolve and there will be no purposeful leadership.”

Imoke also reechoed the decision of the state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to zone the governorship in the 2015 election to the Northern Senatorial District, charging the people to look for someone who will give them purposeful leadership.

“As we collectively look for our new governor from the Northern Senatorial District, we must do so in the hope that he or she will give us purposeful leadership and development,” Imoke said.

"I won"t contest for any political office in 2015" - Governor Imoke

The Executive Governor of Cross River State, Mr. Liyel Imoke has declared that he will not take part in any political office, come 2015.

His declaration may have been as a result of the speculation that he is ready to take seat from the present senator, Victor Ndoma-Egba in 2015.

Addressing newsmen in Calabar, he governor also revealed that he will not impose any governor candidate on the people.

He said:  “People are arrogating powers to me that I don’t want. They say they are waiting for me to speak or observing my body language.

“I don’t want to carry another person’s political wish. People say I am looking for someone that would protect me. Am I stupid? Only a fool would look for someone to protect him.

“Wouldn’t it be great if Cross River State gets a good governor? I would not mind if whoever takes over does not even call me until the end of his tenure, so long as the person does what is right for the state.

” The governor said although he was not going to impose anyone, there was still need for discussion among stakeholders about who will emerge as the next governor.
