Their arrest, which came three days after some insurgents raided communities in the troubled northeastern state, coincided with the visit of Governor Kashim Shettima.

The governor was on solidarity and sympathy visit to Malari after an attack by insurgents claimed nine lives and displaced many.

The people were killed when the militants stormed the villages including: Shettimari, Kammiri, Kakurami, Kalari Auwlari, Burari and Malari , all in Konduga council area.

Governor Shettima was shocked when some youths, alighted from a Volkswagen Golf car wiith four young men, whose hands were tied.

A civilian JTF leader, Nuhu Kumshise said one of the arrested sect member, had been notorious, terrorising and wreaking havoc on the villagers around Konduga.

“We arrested them today after his father handed over them to us. Then they led us into the bush where the two remaining guys hid themselves,” Kumshise said.

One the suspects allegedly confessed to his membership of the deadly group and he further named his leader.

Another member of the Civilian JTF, Bakura  Yusuf said: “Long before now we have been told that one of those arrested is the leader who used to lead attacks on us.”

The governor appealed to the hundreds of displaced persons at the Malari Primary School that they would soon be moved in buses to Konduga and that food items as well as other materials will immediately be provided by the state government.

70 Boko Haram fighters killed in Maiduguri reprisal

Nigerian troops backed by civilian vigilantes on Tuesday claimed to have killed more than 70 ‎Boko Haram fighters in a foiled attack to capture the strategic town of Konduga near Maiduguri.‎

A would-be suicide bomber was shot and killed before he could ram his explosives-laden car into a military checkpoint in the town during the attack on Monday, witnesses said.

Around 150 Boko Haram fighters entered the fishing town with a large herd of cattle pretending to be ‎herders and opened fire on troops stationed in the town, leading to a six-hour gun battle.

“At the last count 73 Boko Haram gunmen were killed in the foiled attack,” a civilian vigilante, Butari Mala, told AFP.

“Among those killed was a suicide bomber who was shot inside his car loaded with explosives before he could reach his target,” he said.

“The rest fled into the bush but were pursued and bombarded by a fighter jet that deployed from Maiduguri.”

A military source in Maiduguri, who requested anonymity because he is not authorised to speak to the media, confirmed Mala’s account, including the death toll.

The attack happened at about 7:00 am (0600 GMT) and the gunmen abandoned the cattle as they approached a military post, said Konduga resident, Abba Kaka.

“Unknown to the Boko Haram gunmen herdsmen in Konduga had been asked to keep away from some designated no-go areas,” he added.

“So when the gunmen came in through these designated areas it was clear to soldiers they were not genuine herdsmen and they met the soldiers waiting for them,” Kaka said by telephone from Maiduguri.

Soldiers and vigilantes have repelled more than a dozen attacks by Boko Haram on Konduga, which is some 35 kilometres (21 miles) southeast of Maiduguri.

Troops and vigilantes have been stationed in Konduga to prevent it from being used as a launchpad to attack the Borno state capital, where the group was founded in 2002.

The latest defence of the town comes after a number of claimed Nigerian military successes, including the recapture of the town of Baga, on the shores of Lake Chad.

Soldiers, backed by armies from neighbouring countries have been involved in a fight-back against the militants, whose attacks have threatened regional security and upcoming elections in Nigeria.

Chibok girls" parents turn to snakes to fight Boko Haram in Sambisa

  • Arrested boko haram members confessed and accused chibok paernts

Boko Haram members are now fleeing the Sambisa forest to local governments areas across Borno State owing to strange developments in the forest, believed to be a spiritual attack.

This hint was given by two members of the Islamic militants arrested on Wednesday at Mairi ward behind University of Maiduguri by members of the Civilian JTF.

According to Kolo Mustapha, one of the insurgents arrested, snakes are now attacking them in the forest.

“Most of us are fleeing because there are too many snakes now in the forest, once they bite, they disappeared and the victims do not last for 24 hours.

“We were told that the people of Chibok local government are the ones turning into snake and attacking us in the forest”, he disclosed.

He said some of their leaders have escaped to Cameroon because they are known to the Nigerian authorities and could be easily identified.

According to him, those of them who lived all their lives in Maiduguri have nowhere to go but to return to the town.

He said they came in Tuesday and were trying to hide in some uncompleted building when some members of the Civilian JTF identified and arrested.

“We are pleading with them to spare our lives, we were forced into the sect, but we know that it is not the right way. I have never killed anyone, but my friend here has killed people”, he said.

Umar Abor, the other sect member arrested said Kolo Mustapha was lying as all of them had participated in all heinous acts by the sect in the past.

“We have fought together since 2010, we have fought in Marte, Bama, Buni Yadima and Gwoza. We were not in Chibok, we have not seen the girls but we heard about it. Our leaders have been talking about it and we have been following all news from the radio.

“We decided to flee when almost all our comrades are leaving the Sambisa because of constant attacks by snakes, which we were told was as a result of the Chibok girls abducted.

“They (our leaders) told us that it was the people of Chibok that are hunting us through diabolical means in the form of snakes. We were in the forest in 2010 and 2011; we left and came back last year but we have never experienced snakes as this year. It is believed that the Chibok people are using “juju” to pursue us because of their children”, he said.

According to him, they had realized their mistakes and had turned a new leaf.

The also promised that if spared, they would help the community in fishing out some of their members.

Ali Musa, leader of the Civilian JTF at Bama road, who arrested the sect members told DailyPost that many of them have been fleeing the Sambisa forest since last two weeks.

“These ones have not attempted to run or do anything stupid, they promised to take us to where they hide their weapons, now we are taking them to our chairman in sector 5, before they will be handed over to security operatives.

“We have arrested dozens since last week while they were trying to come to town”, he added.

Suicide bombers kill 15 civilians, six insurgents in Maiduguri

Twenty-one people died yesterday in a “botched” suicide mission at a Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) facility near Maiduguri, the beleaguered Borno State capital.

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) said the dead were six insurgents and 15 civilians, including a member of Youth Vigilante Group.

It said 17 others were injured in the explosion, which was triggered by the planned suicide bombing.

But one of the suicide bombers was arrested by troops before he could flee the scene.

The Director of Defence Information, Maj-Gen. Chris Olukolade, gave the update in a statement on the incident after the mop-up operation was concluded by troops.

He said: “Also, 15 civilians, including a member of Youth Vigilante Group, died while 17 others were wounded in the explosion that occurred at Mule near Maiduguri on Tuesday afternoon.

“Eight vehicles were also destroyed in the incident. Six of the terrorists died while one has been arrested.”

Many suspected terrorists were also said to have been shot dead by troops who recovered 15 AK47 rifles and 12 magazines.

Besides, they destroyed 14 vehicles, which were either being used for operation or hidden by the terrorists in various parts of the Sambisa forest.

The botched suicide mission was said to have occurred in Mule in the outskirts of Maiduguri where trucks loading fuel from the depot are parked.

The DHQ has ordered troops to protect all sensitive installations and facilities in Borno and Yobe states.

The foiling of the suicide mission came on a day that Cameroon security forces seized over 288 rifles and 35 Rocket Propelled Guns and 35 (IEDs) from insurgents after a fierce encounter.

A statement by the Director, Defence Information, Maj-Gen. Chris Olukolade, in Abuuja said: “Four terrorists believed to be suicide bombers, apparently heading for an NNPC facility along Maiduguri-Damboa road, have died in their IED-laden vehicles.

“The explosions took place at Mule on the outskirt of Maiduguri. Three of the four explosive laden vehicles were immobilised by shots fired at them by soldiers at the checkpoint shortly before the explosions that rocked the area.

“Five soldiers were wounded while the civilian casualties are yet to be determined. More details follow later.”

A military source said: “Following intelligence reports on likely huge reprisals from insurgents since the botched March 14 attack on Giwa Barracks, security has been beefed up in all checkpoints.

“These suicide bombers targeted the NNPC depot in Mule and many trucks in the area awaiting loading. But the soldiers at a checkpoint in the area took a pre-emptive step to curtail their mission.

“If the troops had not been on the alert, we would have been faced with a serious disaster.

“Troops are already combing the area to forestall any fresh bid by the insurgents.”

Responding to a question, the source added: “The DHQ has ordered a 24-hour protection for all sensitive installations and facilities in the Northeast, especially Borno-Yobe axis.

“In spite of the recent gains by the troops, the insurgents have not given up. This is why we are unrelenting in mopping up suspected hideouts or camps in this axis.”

The botched suicide mission came on a day Cameroon security forces seized over 288 rifles and 35 Rocket Propelled Guns and 35 locally made IEDs from insurgents after a fierce encounter at Abugasse, which is close to the Chadian border.

The DHQ, in a separate statement by Gen. Olukolade, said: “The resolve for collaborative efforts in fighting terrorism in the sub-region got a boost recently when Cameroon security forces made a huge seizure of arms apparently meant for use by terrorists operating in Nigeria last weekend.

“ Over 288 rifles and 35 Rocket Propelled Guns as well as 35 locally made IEDs were recovered after a fierce encounter at Abugasse, Cameroon, close to the Chadian border.

“Other weapons recovered included pistols, mortar bombs, sub-machine guns and various calibres of ammunition following the arrest of two suspects believed to be major arms suppliers to the terrorists in Nigeria.

“They were nabbed in Abugasse near the Chadian border with Cameroon. Also in their possession were over 50 Cameroonian Passports as well as a Toyota Jeep.

“It will be recalled that the Cameroonian authorities recently pledged to back Nigeria’s counter terrorism efforts.”

The statement gave an update on how Nigerian troops killed many suspected terrorists, destroyed 14 vehicles and recovered 15 AK47 rifles and 12 magazines.

The DHQ said there had been intense operations in Alagamo and Sambisa forest since Monday.

The DHQ added: “Also, the renewed offensive on terrorists by Nigerian troops have continued to record series of arrests of terrorists and recovery of arms, especially close to the nation’s border with Cameroon.

“Apart from arms recovered following disclosure from captured terrorists lately, more arms have been captured in the ongoing offensive in different fronts.

“The arrest at a check point of a terrorist driving in a green Peugeot vehicle with registration number Bauchi 264 AA heading to Maiduguri from Alagarno during the weekend, led to the recovery of 15 AK47 rifles and 12 magazines and various yet to be assembled rifles.

“Meanwhile, the offensive on terrorists in various fronts is continuing. The Alagarno area as well as various points of Sambisa forest and suburbs have been witnessing intense operations since Monday.

“Apart from several dead terrorists, 14 vehicles which were either being used for operation or hidden by the terrorists in various parts of the forests and theatres have been destroyed.

“ Various calibres of weapons and ammunitions were also recovered in the course of fighting and subsequent cordon and search of the areas.

“Intensive air and ground surveillance are also ongoing in the general area.”
