Rector missing after students protest in Ogun State

The whereabouts of the rector Ogun State Institute of Technology, Igbesa, Ado-Odo-Ota Local government area days after students protested and shut down the school.

The incident took place on Thursday and the protest forced the rector, Dr. Olufunke Akinkuolere into hiding, according to reports.

 

The protest led to tension in the area, forcing traders and residents around the school to quickly closed their shops and run for their lives.

It was reliably gathered that the students resort to prostesting after the reckor’s plans to cancel the election of the institution’s Students Union Government, SUG.

A source who didn’t want to be named told our correspondent that the students woke up very early for the protest. They blocked the main entrace of the institute as early as 7.am making sure no vehicles entered the school.

The source said: “the protest started on Wednesday and got worse the following day, when the students were set to conduct the SUG election but were suddenly stopped by the rector.

“The election was supposed to have been held last December but was postponed by the rector who resumed office in June, 2014. And when the students planned to conduct the election on Thursday their was an order to stop it,” the source hinted”

Information gathered revealed that though the rector is no where to be found, but the students did not physically attack any lecturer as even the resident lecturers stayed in their apartment without harm.

Due to the protest, the government of Ogun State directed that the school be shut down and ordered the students to vacate the campus with immediate effect.

Attempts to get response from the rector proved abortive as she did not asnwer her calls nor respond to the text messages sent to her mobile lines.

Meanwhile the Chairman, Student Union Electoral Committee, Tunde Okunlola said that the rector claimed the decision to cancel the Student Union Government’s election was from the government, but assured that the protest will continue until such directive is reversed.
