Fayose’s clampdown on opposition, threat to poll - APC chief

The All Progressives Congress’ Candidate for Ekiti Central senatorial district, Amb. Gbenga Olofin, has described the clampdown on opposition by Governor Ayodele Fayose, as a threat to the 2015 general elections.

In a press release made available to journalists on Sunday in Ado Ekiti, Olofin said the desperation of Fayose to rig in all his imposed candidates during the elections would be resisted by the people.

Four cabinet members in the administration of former Governor Kayode Fayemi were arrested on Friday by the Government’s assets recovery task force for allegedly withholding government official cars.

Those arrested were Biodun Akin-Fasae, Ayodele Jinadu, Oluwole Ariyo and Dr Bayo Orire.

The Commissioner of Police, Taiwo Lakanu, however, invited them to a meeting on that day where he explained that the Police had no hand in their arrest.

“I only intervened by calling them for a meeting and advised them on the issue because, if not well handled, it could heat up the polity. All I want is an amicable settlement,” Lakanu had told our correspondent.

The APC had described their arrest and forceful confiscation of their official cars over non-payment of the cost as a ploy by Fayose to take its leaders out of circulation ahead of February 14 general elections.

Olofin said it was worrisome that the governor was supervising “attacks on innocent Ekiti People because of politics, tearing and destruction of posters and billboards across the state in a day light.

“Everybody is now sleeping with one eye closed in the state because of the fear of the unknown and the security across the state has been deteriorating because the action of the governor has heated up the polity.”

Olofin urged traditional rulers and the appropriate authority to call the Governor to order.

“Ekiti people are expecting better performances from the Governor, but the reverse is the case now. The signals of impending electoral defeat of his candidates that Fayose is getting from the populace has turned him to nothing but a wounded Lion.”

According to him, the current wind of change blowing in the country is a divine one, adding that anybody that wants to prevent it in Ekiti will be the one to be first consumed by the wrath of God.

He described the APC presidential candidate, Gen. Mohammadu Buhari (retd.), as a man of principle, integrity, honour, an advocate of the masses and a great crusader of war against corruption who was ready to bring about the desired development into the country.

“The challenges being faced by Nigerians raging from political instability, economic kwarshiokor, insecurity, institutionalised corruption and above all, flagrant abuse of constitution called for a change in the leadership of the country to move forward,” he said.

Olofin, however, called on APC supporters to work hard to ensure that all the party’s candidates win the general elections.
