Acquitted: Court Frees Man Who Hid Mother In Wardrobe For 10 Years

A High Court sitting in Imo State in Oguta judicial division yesterday discharged and acquitted Dr Chimezie Osigwe who was alleged to have killed and embalmed his late mother, Mrs Lucy Osigwe, and locked her corpse up in his wardrobe for 10 years.

Justice Goddy Ahunihu, in his udgment in the suit number HOG/23C/2013 held that the prosecuting counsel lacked evidence to prosecute the defendant who was alleged to have murdered his mother in August 2004 in his compound at Nzurume, Umuagbu, Ejemekwuru in Oguta Local Government Area of the state.

“No proof that he killed his mother, since a witness and report have said that she died as a result of the earthquake allegedly caused by the disturbance from the activities of the oil company. There is no proof of any harm on the body of her mother, therefore no intent or guilt; the accused is hereby discharged,” Ahunihu stated.

Addressing journalists shortly after the judgement, Osigwe described the verdict as a landmark and epoch making in his life.

“We have now seen justice exhumed from injustice. As a member of Sat Guru Maharaji, I want the entire world to know that it is a dirty calumny, the truth was covered but it has been defended by Guru Maharaji.

“The faith of Maharaji does not eat human flesh, how can people who don’t eat meat and fish eat human beings as they alleged?” Osigwe asked.

Osigwe further denied killing his mother. He narrated that his mother died as a result of the activities of an oil company, which he noted cracked the wall of the external bathroom of the house where she went to ease herself.

“I did not kill my mother; she went outside the bathroom to ease herself and the wall fell down on her as a result of the earthquake caused by the oil company. I reported the matter to the police and autopsy was conducted on her. I embalmed her because I wanted to sue the oil company.”
