Moyes, Rooney, Drogba to grace Yobo’s testimonial game

Oliseh quit to save Nigerian football, says Masteroudes

Former Everton and Manchester United Manager, David Moyes, England captain, Wayne Rooney and Chelsea of England’s former striker, Didier Drogba are among the stars from across the world scheduled to participate in Joseph Yobo’s centenary and testimonial game billed to hold in Port Harcourt on May 27.

Also expected at the game billed for the Adokie Amiesiamaka Stadium, are Liverpool of England defender, Kolo Toure and former Cameroun captain, Samuel Eto, among others.

Speaking during the unveiling of the programme for the testimonial match, Yobo, who captained Nigeria to its third African Nations Cup triumph in 2013, disclosed that many of the stars who played with and against him during his over 15 years sojourn in European football have indicated interest in coming to Nigeria for the game.

“I cannot start mentioning names of the others because we are trying to see how we can accommodate the numerous requests to be part of the programme. But I want to assure you that many known names in European football will be part of the match. We will give you their names as soon as we finalise the list,” he said.

Yobo played for over six years for Everton with Moyes as his manager when Rooney was just cutting his teeth as a player in the Liverpool-based club’s first team.

Yobo revealed that the match, which was early scheduled to hold in Lagos, was moved to Port Harcourt when the foreign players kicked against the artificial turf of the Teslim Balogun Stadium.

Earlier, chairman of the event, John Masteroudes, a former Nigeria Football Association (NFA) executive committee member, congratulated Yobo for being among the progressive elements in the development of the country’s football.

He said, “it is very difficult for anybody to play up to a 100 matches for the national team and I am happy that Yobo’s contributions to the national team is being appreciated.

“I am very much in my elements because I am in the midst of people whom I have known for over 25 years as a participant in Nigerian football.

“We are here to celebrate Yobo, who has played for the country for over 100 times. He has seen the good and the ugly sides of the game and we appreciate him.”

Among the former Super Eagles’ coaches and players at the event were Austin ‘Jay Jay’ Okocha, Nwankwo Kanu, Taribo West, Ifeanyi Udeze, Peter Rufai, Augustine Eguavoen, Christian Chukwu, Amodu Shaibu, Fanny Amun, Henry Nwosu, Victor Ikpeba and Tajudeen Disu.

Meanwhile, Masteroudes has posited that immediate past coach of the Super Eagles, Sunday Oliseh, had to quit his job because of the divisive environment at the national team. He said it was in the best interest of Nigeria that Oliseh vacated his position.

“It is very difficult for anybody to build a strong national team because the coach picks players from different clubs with diverging philosophy. And when our national team is divisive as we witnessed in recent times, it becomes more difficult.

“I am glad that Oliseh decided to leave, not because he is not a good coach, because his presence was very divisive to the team.

“I hope that with Siasia we will have a united team with no more divisions because that is the only way we can think of getting a good team,” he said.

Oliseh: I’ll expose NFF

Former  Super Eagles coach, Sunday Oliseh, is prepared to meet the Nigeria Football Federation in court over what they termed breach of contract.

The Football house is reportedly threatening to sue Oliseh for quitting his post as coach without prior notice, but the 42 year old gaffer is optimistic the court will vindicate him on the false allegations levelled against him.

“They said I was paid for three months (December 2015, January 2016 and February 2016) and half-year rent for July-December 2015. But we will see who is telling lies,” Oliseh said.

“Since they are prepared to expose themselves, I will help them further. My lawyers are studying the reports, and when we meet, we shall know who breached our contractual agreements.”

Oliseh further claims his eight months on the job was a lesson for him, that only a wholistic change is needed in Nigerian football void of favouritism and nepotism.

“My time there was a big lesson and unless a wholistic change is made in the administrative level, it will be difficult.”

Shock, Disbelief Trail Oliseh’s Resignation

NIGERIAN football followers woke up yesterday to the news that Super Eagles Chief Coach, Sunday Oliseh, has quit his job.

The Eagles’ Manager, who recently had a run in with his employers, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), following his ‘unsavoury’ comments in his twitter account, quit his job through the same medium in the early hours of yesterday.

The former Super Eagles’ captain, who took over from Stephen Keshi eight months ago, hinged his decision to quit the job on “contract violations, lack of support, unpaid wages, benefits to my players, assistant coaches and myself.”

He wrote: “I feel fortunate, blessed and eternally grateful for having had the honour to play, captain and coach this great nation of ours, Nigeria.”

Before the sudden turn of events, Oliseh had declined to meet with the NFF Technical Committee on Thursday in Abuja as scheduled, saying he wanted to use the time to travel to England to meet some of the players that would likely feature for Nigeria against Egypt in the 2017 AFCON’s qualifiers in March.

According to sources at the NFF, Oliseh was paid his salary arrears and other entitlements of N20 million a few hours before he resigned.

Speaking on the development, a member of the NFF technical committee, Paul Bassey, said Oliseh decided to run away because he knew he would not be able to beat Egypt in the forthcoming African Nations Cup qualifiers next month.

“This is my personal view. As a young man, Oliseh must have seen the handwriting on the wall. There is no way he would have won the two games against Egypt because the build up is very poor.

“It is like he saw failure and so decided to take a walk instead of waiting for Nigerians to call for his head. As I said, it is my personal view.”

Also reacting to the situation, former Super Eagles’ Manager, Adegboye Onigbinde, described the development as very unfortunate.

“Sunday Oliseh’s resignation is very unfortunate. I hope the NFF will do something about it as quickly as possible,” he said.

Onigbinde called on the NFF to engage a consortium of coaches in the interim to prepare the team for next month’s matches against Egypt.

He said: “I was really shocked with the news of Oliseh’s resignation but not totally shocked because of the unfortunate trends between the employee and employer in recent weeks may be we were merely waiting for the accident to happen.

“The contents of his resignation letter are between him and the NFF though the nation’s fate and core interest are at stake.

“It is unfortunate we waited helplessly to see it happened as the hand writing has been clearly on the wall.

“Before Oliseh was employed I expressed my deep reservation though I was called names because of his antecedent.

“We should not waste further time ruing the rights and wrongs of his resignation but move fast to cover the vacuum because of the fast approaching AFCON double header against Egypt in Nigeria and Cairo.

“What I’m suggesting is to build a consortium of coaches around a tested and experienced coach who will command the respect of the players as well as the assisting coaches. I am totally against the recruitment of a foreign coach for the job, which I know some people will want to do.”

Also shocked by Oliseh’s decision to quit his job, Super Eagles’ former midfielder, Sani Kaita, said the development at this time when the country should be preparing for the AFCON qualifiers against Egypt on March 25 and 29 does not augur well for Nigeria.

“We have just a few weeks to the games against Egypt and having a new coach will make it difficult for the team,” he said.

However, Kaita advised the NFF to draft in Shuaibu Amodu to take charge of the Super Eagles, saying the federation’s current technical director has the “experience” to salvage the situation.

“Honestly they should bring in Shuaibu Amodu to lead the team because he has the experience and I am sure he will link up well with the players,” he said.

There were insinuations in some quarters yesterday that Oliseh may have throw in the towel to save his life.

After contracting a virus in one of his official assignments, Oliseh was said to have alleged that some people within ‘the system’ were using occult means to manipulate his life.

At a point, the outspoken coach was said to have confronted his staff and warned them that there were many witches and wizards who were trying to undermine the success of the Eagles.

“He warned those fond of putting their hands in their pockets before shaking him to desist or keep their handshakes as he feared they touch objects concealed in their pockets before offering to shake him”, a source said.

Also, the coach alleged that many of the people surrounding him do not believe in the success of the team as he claimed that they don’t rejoice when the Eagles score goals. “He is always scared in camp and suspicious of even members of his back room staff,” the source said.

I’m struggling financially, Oliseh cries out

Super Eagles coach, Sunday Oliseh has revealed he is financially handicapped in his preparations for the crucial Africa Cup of Nations qualification tie against Egypt on March 25 in Kaduna.

Oliseh, disclosed on a Brila FM sports programe that his team list is being delayed because it is hard for him to move around Europe to meet the players he intends to invite for the tie.

He said: “I am struggling financially, waiting for approvals to move around Europe, so it has been quiet. It has to do with transport, accommodation and other expenses while moving out. “I need to spend 15, 20 minutes on the phone to speak to each player before he is invited,” said the under-fire coach.

He disclosed that he intends to open camp in mid March with players from the local league ahead of the must win encounter with the Pharaohs of Egypt.

Oliseh said seven or eight players from the African Championship team will be in the Super Eagles that will face the Egyptians who are playing Burkina Faso in a friendly to boost their preparations.

Super Eagles: nobody is irreplaceable, says Oliseh

Super Eagles Head Coach, Sunday Oliseh says nobody is irreplaceable as long as he remains the team’s handler.

Oliseh, who was reacting to the exit of Emmanuel Emenike from the team on Tuesday in Abuja, noted that only Nigeria was irreplaceable.

Sunday Oliseh, new super eagles coach

“Emenike served Nigeria well and I think he gave it a lot of thought before he decided to retire; we wish him all the best, but nobody is irreplaceable, only Nigeria is irreplaceable.“I think Nigeria produced great players Africa has ever seen, but they retired and Nigeria did not die, however, we should thank him (Emenike) for what he did for Nigeria,’’ Oliseh said.

He said that in spite of his health challenges, the Super Eagles 2018 World Cup qualifying match against Swaziland scheduled to take place in Lobamba, Swaziland on Nov. 13 was his major focus at present.Oliseh, who described the Swaziland encounter as `very crucial,’ said that his ambition was to see the country play at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

“I want to get my country to the pool stage and eventually to the World Cup and that is what our ambition is.“We always have the reason to entertain fear against any opponent, because if we don’t respect them, we will be kicked out and this is a World Cup qualifier.

“Swaziland is a difficult team; the team shocked Guinea and it is not going to be easy playing them, especially on an artificial turf in their home. “So, we know what is waiting for us because we have had our wake-up call with Tanzania; the boys are in good spirit, so, I am optimistic,’’ he said.

Oliseh said that some of his players were yet to arrive the team’s camp due to flight problem caused by the strike by the crew of Lufthansa airline. He, however, assured that the football house had made alternative arrangements to enable the players join their colleagues in good time for the match.

The former Super Eagles captain, who assured that everybody would be given an opportunity to play, said that where each player plied his trade would not matter to him, so long as he got the needed results. “Everybody has a chance of playing; we didn’t invite anybody here for holiday.

“As far as I am concerned, where one play doesn’t matter; if a home player proves to be better in form, he will start the game,’’ he said. The 20 players trained under the watchful eyes of the Super Eagles coaching crew led by Oliseh. Striker Obafemi Martins, midfielder Ogenyi Onazi and Portugal-based defender, Abdullahi Shehu, are yet to join the team following flight problem.

The team which is expected to depart Abuja for Swaziland on a chartered Arik airline would fly direct to Port Harcourt after the encounter for the return-leg match scheduled for Nov. 17.

"Yes, I Hate Jay-Jay Okocha - Sunday Oliseh

Super Eagles coach Sunday Oliseh has finally laid to rest rumours that he does not see eye-to-eye with his former assistant in the Eagles Austin Jay-Jay Okocha when he said; ‘’yes, I hate Jay-Jay’’.

A reporter had asked him to clear the air on rumours that he does not see or stay in the same room with the former playmaker of the Super Eagles. The hall was like a graveyard when he made the pronouncement. He looked round and explained further. “I hate Okocha because anytime we play Tennis, he beats me.

We played at the weekend at Sheraton Hotel and he defeated me’’. He made light of the rumour that started after he was appointed coach of the senior national team. Many still believe that Okocha stabbed Oliseh in the back when he accepted the captaincy of the Eagles to the 2002 World Cup.

‘’We’re the best of friends and we played Tennis at the weekend’’, he emphasised. Okocha is currently the Chairman of Delta State Football Association and Chairman of NFF’s Study Group.

Speaking on the Eagles, Oliseh said that he was going to make the Eagles to play team football combined with individual talents. ‘’If you remember our victories in 1994 and 1996, it was based on individual talents. But we do not have such individual talents again. What we need to do is to play collectively. That is what obtains in Germany and Spain. It’s a lot of hardwork. We’re here to do our best’’, he added.

The battle and final fall of Coach Keshi

By Ehi Ekhator, Naija Center News

A former Nigerian football coach got more than what he bargained for after he was fired on July 4, 2015 by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) over what it termed as “lack of commitment to achieve the Federation’s objectives as set out in the Coach’s employment contract.”

Stephen Keshi was once rated as a messiah when he took over the National team, Super Eagles in November 2, 2011. He signed three years contract with the Nigeria Football Federation after taking over from the former coach, Samson Siasia

His songs of praises finally came to a halt when the NFF announced his termination two months after he signed another two years contract in 2015.

Keshi secured his high place in Nigeria football history after he led the team that won the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in South Africa by defeating Burkina Faso by 1-0; for the first time in 19 years.

Gradually, Keshi ‘s pride started taking over, he locked horns with the NFF who gave him the contract, and his relationship with his top players like Osaze Odemwingie went sour. The NFF described the Big Boss as he is fondly called, as a very stubborn and uncontrollable individual.

24 hours after he returned from AFCON in 2013, praises flowing in from different parts of the countries to congratulate his effort and for making history.  Keshi announced his resignation on a South African Radio blaming the NFF disrespect for his action, and it took the intervention of the former Senate President David Mark to persuade him to change his mind. He also announced he had numerous contracts in queue for him

The ex-Super Eagle coach continued to enjoy the treatment of a coach as an official of the NFF who didn’t want his name mentioned said he was enjoying the closeness of the Presidency and some top government officials which led to the reason the NFF could not push him aside.

A sport Analyst and a journalist with African Independent Television, Jide Ogunleye described the incident between Keshi and NFF as unfortunate. He said “He (coach Keshi) knew the new board of NFF didn’t like him as he was enjoying the influence of the former President   Goodluck Jonathan”.

“The Football Federation had refused signing him again but President the President influenced the decision to fire him and made sure he was retained.

On August 23 2013, Keshi had a fallout with Belgian Tom Saintfelt.  He accused coach Keshi of being a racist over a statement he made on United Kingdom-based African TV show, Vox Africa’s Sports360 in which he said “He (Saintfiet) is not an African person, he is a white dude, and he should go back to Belgium”.

The fallout came after the team defeated Tahiti  6-1 at the Fifa Confederation Cup at the Estadio Mineirao in Belo Horizonte, and was defeated by Uruguay 1-2 inside the arena Fonte Nova in Salvador in Brazil.

November 16, Keshi took the Super Eagles to the 2014 Fifa World Cup in Brazil for a fifth appearance after defeating Ethiopia 2-0 in Calabar and Junauary 9, the Big Boss got the reward of  his several winnings by clicking the Africa Coach of the year.

The more Keshi showed his coaching strength, the more he crossed lines and accumulated enemies. Adding to his previous fallout with the NFF, the Big Boss rejected the suggestion of a foreign assistant coach and requested for his assistants, Sylvanus Okpala.

Just like the coach, indiscipline crawled into the team. The Senate President was shocked in Brazil when the players demanded for 25 percent of the money the federation was expecting from the FIFA for the first round matches.

The players threatened not to play the match against Iran which eventually ended in 0-0 unless the requested percentage reached them.

Though Keshi apologized to Mark, who is one of his backbone and a pillar behind the reason the NFF were soft with him.  The apology was not taken seriously by the Federal Government delegation and the NFF who described the move by the team, headed by Keshi as a national disgrace, according to an official who didn’t want to be named.

The same money fight was reported from the USA camp as they had put NFF on notice over money before they boarded the flight to Brazil.  A year before that, the Super Eagles team had embarked on a strike in Namibia over match bonus during FIFA Confederations Cup

Both Nigerians and NFF as a body believed that the poor performance by the players was as a result of the money fight, hence blamed Keshi for his inability to control his team.

After Nigeria loss to France in the World cup second round in June 2014, Keshi announced his resignation as the Nigeria head coach for the second time but hang around as requested by the NFF, since there was no new appointed coach to take over from him

In October 2014, according to Supersport report, the embattled coach was fired along with his assistance. 14 days later, he was reinstated after the NFF decision was again overruled by the President, Goodluck Jonathan.

After the Presidential election in March, it was obvious that Keshi would lose his position. Many believed that he should have left when he had the chance but he didn’t think the former President will lose to the former Nigeria dictator, Muhammadu Buhari.

After Jonathan handover to the new President, Keshi was finally fired on July 4, 2015 after he signed a new contract in May, for lack of commitment to achieve the Federation’s objectives as set out in the Coach’s employment contract.

Justifying the NFF’s action, the Sport analyst, Jide said “He breached his contract; no employer would take what he did applying for another job while you are still on existing one. It was published by the Ivorian Daily Paper, a full list of coaches that applied for the post of the Ivorian National Coach. If Keshi denied applying then who forwarded his credentials and CV for application?”

Effort to make the Secretary General of NFF, Mr. Sunusi talk on the issue proved abortive as he said he will not talk on the Federation former employee.

Wilson Raj Perumal: The man who fixed football

(CNN) — He rose from humble beginnings, worked his way through the local leagues before graduating to become a major player on the international stage, netting him millions of dollars along the way.

But this isn’t a tale about a footballing hero. This is a story about one of modern sport’s greatest villains — the man dubbed the most notorious match-fixer in the world.

You may not be familiar with the name Wilson Raj Perumal but given how prolific he was, you might have watched one of the games he’s fixed.

“I never really counted, but I think it should be between 80-100 football matches,” Perumal told CNN’s Don Riddell in his first-ever television interview.

Few doors seemed to be closed to Perumal.

Match-fixer: Gave orders from team bench Jerome Valcke: Match-fixing a ‘disease’ How does match fixing occur?

“I was on the bench at times, and telling players what to do, giving orders to the coach. It was that easy. There was no policing whatsoever.”

Officials were just as easy to target, he boasts, with “no barriers” when approaching select referees, while certain football associations would “welcome you with open arms,” he added.

It was only after his arrest and subsequent conviction in 2011 — his fourth for football-related crimes – - that Perumal started coming clean on his former life, with the poacher-turned-gamekeeper now helping European police combat match-fixing.

In all, Perumal claims to have pocketed around $5 million himself from match-fixing.

However, he lost it all gambling, perhaps explaining why the 49-year-old recently published an autobiography, “Kelong Kings,” recounting his journey from rural Singapore to football’s globetrotting Mr Fix-it.

“I had my boyhood dreams. I wanted to be a soldier but during my school days I got a criminal record and couldn’t really pursue what I wanted to. And then I got attracted to betting when I was about 19-20 years old,” he said.

“I kind of got hooked and I didn’t want to lose … so I started fixing local matches,” he says.

Perumal plied his trade in Singapore’s local football leagues in the late 1980s before joining what international crime-fighting organization INTERPOL recently described as “the world’s most notorious match-fixing syndicate”

allegedly headed by Tan Seet Eng — better known as “Dan Tan,” who is now reportedly in detention in Singapore.

As the Internet age dawned in the mid-1990s, so Perumal’s match-fixing horizons expanded.

“We could see all these matches around the world … I had the opportunity to target vulnerable countries … people who were prone to accept bribes,” he said.

“So I registered a company and started e-mailing associations and building relationships.”

‘Like two hands prepared to clap’

The 49-year-old’s first foray into international match-fixing — a 1997 friendly match between Zimbabwe and Bosnia Herzegovina — failed, he says.

Perumal alleges up to six players from the Zimbabwe team had agreed to lose the match 4-0 in return for a share of $100,000. But the game played in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia finished in a 2-2 draw.

“We gave them a result that was difficult to accomplish and what happened during the game was that one player accidentally kicked the ball into the net.”

A decade later, Perumal targeted Zimbabwe again in what became known as the “Asiagate” scandal with both players and officials receiving bribes to fix a string of matches between 2007 and 2009.

Match-fixing suspect turns himself in Eaton talks match fixing in January Match-fixing scandal engulfs Europe Arrests in soccer match-fixing probe

“We were like two hands prepared to clap,” Perumal says.

Former FIFA match-fixing investigator, Terry Steans was shocked when he was handed a FIFA case file on match-fixing in Zimbabwe in 2009.

“I read that file and thought: ‘No. It can’t be. It can’t be this easy and it can’t be this prevalent,’” Steans told CNN.

“Five years later, I know yes it was and yes it is. But that file opened our eyes and it was to set FIFA Security, at that time, on a path to try and discover as much as we could about the fixers and how prevalent and widespread they were.”

Zimbabwe’s game was destroyed by the fixing scandal, Steans says.

Dozens of players and officials were sanctioned, some receiving life bans while others were barred from playing for several years.

The Footballers Union of Zimbabwe has been critical of the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) investigation but Steans says ZIFA deserves credit for taking action.

“They appointed an investigation committee and they took the investigation as far as they possibly could do.”

CNN invited ZIFA to comment on match-fixing in the country but they hadn’t responded by the time of publication.

Hat trick of jail terms

Perumal says he achieved around a 70-80% success rate and claims to have rigged games at the Olympics, World Cup qualifiers, the women’s World Cup, the CONCACAF Gold Cup and the African Cup of Nations.

But his attempts to corrupt didn’t always go undetected by the authorities, notably in Singapore where he was imprisoned three times for football-related offences.

In 1995, he was jailed for 12 months for trying to bribe a football player. Four years later he was imprisoned for 26 months for introducing a referee to a match-fixer and in 2000 he attacked a footballer with a hockey stick prior to a game — an offense he says he deeply regrets.

In 2011, the football authorities eventually caught up with Perumal again, this time in Finland where he was arrested and subsequently jailed for fixing matches in the Veikkausliiga, the country’s premier football division.

Perumal served one year of a two-year sentence before being extradited to Hungary where he has been helping police there with match-fixing investigations in the Balkans.

Steans was shocked when police showed him Perumal’s list of contacts.

“Perumal had 38 countries in one phone book contacts list — he had officials and players from those 38 countries,” Steans told CNN.

“If you then go to his laptop address book, there were over 50. FIFA has 209 associations … so we are talking a quarter of FIFA associations for one fixer,” he added.

“As we now know, he used most of these people and used them for his own ends and his syndicate’s ends and made a lot of money out of it.”

He might have lost all his ill-gotten gains but Perumal looks back fondly on that period of his life.

“I have no regrets. It was like, it was a phase of my life and I enjoyed it and I traveled around the world. I had a good time.”

There are glimmers of remorse. Perumal says he feels sorry for fixing some matches but then says there are “no regrets” for others.

“Football is no longer a sport. It is more like a business now. So I think we’re just trying to make money out of this business. People want to win and they will do anything just to get a result.”

Pitch battle

FIFA says preserving the game’s integrity is “a top priority” and in 2011 announced it was giving INTERPOL €20 million ($26.5 million) to fight match-fixing.

“We take any allegations of match manipulation very seriously and are looking into those,” FIFA’s media department told CNN via email.

“Obviously we are aware of publications such as ‘Kelong Kings.’ We do not further comment on our activities and we do not share investigative reports.

“FIFA continues to work closely with law enforcement agencies as well as the respective public authorities and other sports organizations on a national regional and global level to tackle the issue of match manipulation.”

But Perumal thinks they could be doing more.

“FIFA has not come up with enough strategies or methods or publicity or marketing or whatever you can call it, to combat match-fixing,” Perumal says.

“FIFA are doing a lot of things to combat racism but I think match-fixing is more of a problem than racism. I’m not saying FIFA shouldn’t pump in so much money (to tackle racism) but what I’m saying is that match-fixing is a more pressing issue.”

Steans says Perumal has been “value for money” for investigators helping them understand how match-fixers operate.

“Wilson is a bit of an enigma,” he says. “But you know what, every piece of information that he gave out of Finland and Hungary that came our way was right.”

The former FIFA man is still fighting match fixing, working as a consultant for a sports corruption company.

But given the recent past, he fears for football’s future if match fixing continues to carry on virtually unchecked.

“We end up with a game that lacks integrity, with the game’s reputation in tatters and with fans not really knowing what they’re watching,” Steans says.

“Will fans watch? We’d probably end up with something similar to Zimbabwe where fans walked away, sponsors walked away … You will end up with a game that means nothing. Just means nothing.

“And when it means nothing, sponsors don’t want it and fans don’t want it either. So teams would be playing in empty stadiums. It’d be a desert.”

I want to continue as Super Eagles coach - Keshi

Super Eagles Coach, Stephen Keshi, has expressed his desire to extend his contract with Nigeria.

The AFCON-winning coach in a chat with africanFootball.com from his base in the United States said:”Yes, I met with Deji Tinubu in Lagos before heading out for America to see my family.

Stephen Keshi“It’s my country, I am ready to serve. I have started something I would love to finish.”

However, Keshi quickly added the working conditions for his new deal have to be better than what he had previously.

“But I cannot work the way I worked last time. It’s not possible! All my staff, no!no!!no!! We have to be professional, everybody has to do what they are supposed to do,” he stated.

“I cannot be paying another staff salary, when I am not the Nigeria Football Federation. We will see how it goes. If the conditions are met, we will be there, no wahala.”

In the meantime, the NFF has disclosed to africanFootball.com that it will forward a letter of intent for contract renewal this week to the former Super Eagles captain.

Tinubu, the Head of a three-man committee for Keshi’s contract renewal, said: “We have made tremendous progress.

“We will first send a letter of our intent for a renewal of his contract and expect a reply from him as quickly as possible.

“This would allow us to start working on the terms of contract. We would have our terms and we know he would have his terms. But we would be working in such a way that we would arrive at an agreeable term that would suit both parties and then hopefully he signs.

“We can’t put a time limit on this, but we hope we are done with it as quick as possible considering that we have a game in September,” Tinubu stated.

Keshi is confused - Emmanuel Babayero

Atlanta 96 Olympic Gold medalist, Emmanuel Babayaro has reacted to Super Eagles Coach Stephen Keshi’s denial about his resignation from his role.

Emmanuel Babayaro

Keshi was widely reported to have resigned from his role after Nigeria’s loss to France in the round of 16 after a meeting with his players.

However, Keshi denied he has resigned yesterday saying he bid his players farewell because his contract will expire after the World cup and he hasn’t been offered a new one.

Babayaro known for his fearless stand on issues described his denial as that of a confused man.

“When I read about his denial, I felt disappointed because he failed to convince me with his side of the story” He said.

“To start with he didn’t deny he wished his players bye, if he truly have hopes of continuing he won’t address his players so fast, at least let the pain of crashing out subside a little, and maybe hear from the NFF bigwigs before telling his players he might not continue like he claimed.

“To me he is looking for attention and maybe he is at cross roads over to stay or leave, he appears confused a bit as he loves Nigeria and his job.”

The owner of Pioneer football club also urge the NFF hierarchy to address the issue of Keshi’s stay or departure with all urgency as the 2015 Africa Nations cup is around the corner.

“Our first qualifier for the Nations cup in 2015 is less than two months away,we should be concern with players invitations not who will handle the team?”

“The NFF most move quickly, make a decision on his future to avoid panics when the qualifiers are close or begin. “

Africa champions, Nigeria are grouped with Sudan, South Africa and a yet to be known team after the third round of qualifiers is decided.

Fifa ban: Suarez loses 888poker sponsorship deal

Luis Suarez’s shameful bite on Giorgio Chiellini has cost him a sponsorship deal with 888poker, the company confirmed on Friday.

Suarez was hit with a four-month ban from all football activity by FIFA on Thursday and is also banned for nine international games with Uruguay.

Luis Suarez

And the 27-year-old’s moment of madness has also hit him in the pocket: one of his main off-pitch sponsors, 888poker, has confirmed it is ending its deal with the striker.

A company statement read on Yahoo Sport:“888poker signed Luis Suarez following a fantastic season for which his achievements were widely recognised.

“Regrettably, following his actions during Uruguay’s World Cup match against Italy on Tuesday, 888poker has decided to terminate its relationship with Luis Suarez with immediate effect.”

The poker company may not be the only firm to distance themselves from Suarez.

Forbes magazine reports that Adidas are taking the matter “very seriously” – something which could translate into financial repercussions, considering that Suarez had already tried the firm’s patience when he bit Branislav Ivanovic last year.

Adidas is reported to be considering pulling his deal and will apparently make a decision following the World Cup.

888poker, which made $53.2m (£31m) in pre-tax profits in 2013, signed Suarez last month and have been running a series of promotions to cash in on his name.

888poker had clearly been watching Suarez’s efforts in Brazil closely, and celebrating his goals at the World Cup:

Suarez is not the first sports star to be hit in the pocket for his behaviour.

Tiger Woods’s income dropped dramatically as several sponsors dropped him or declined to renew existing deals following the revelations over his extra-marital affairs in 2009, with Accenture and Gatorade – whose endorsement was worth a reported $100 million – among those who distanced themselves from the golf superstar.

Leeds warned off Dolan chase

Reading will not be entertaining any offers for academy boss Eamonn Dolan, who has been linked with the Leeds United job.

Dolan has been talked of as a potential replacement for Brian McDermott at Elland Road, with Leeds owner Massimo Cellino seeking a domestic head coach to take over.

But Reading director of football Nicky Hammond revealed the club has no intention of letting Dolan leave the role he has been in since leaving Exeter City 10 years ago.

Hammond said: “Reading FC are aware of the interest of another Championship club in our academy manager Eamonn Dolan.

“Eamonn is an integral part of our club and is under contract to Reading Football Club.

“Eamonn has done an incredible job since taking over from Brendan Rodgers and we hope he will be a big part of our club for many years to come.

“He has a fantastic relationship with our manager Nigel Adkins and we do not welcome any approaches from any club for our key staff. We hope this is the end of the matter.”

Doncaster delay announcement

Doncaster’s scheduled press conference to announce the proposed takeover of the club by Louis Tomlinson and John Ryan has been cancelled.

The club and One Direction band member Tomlinson had been hoping to make a formal announcement on Wednesday after a press conference planned for last Friday at Wembley was postponed.

A deal has yet to be concluded, and talks are ongoing regarding issues connected with Tomlinson’s image rights.

The club made no comment on the matter, but a further statement is expected later this week.

Tomlinson is scheduled to perform with his One Direction bandmates in Sweden on Friday night as the next leg of their world tour gets under way and both parties are hoping to conclude a deal before then.

Doncaster confirmed at the end of last month that they were in talks with Tomlinson’s representatives about a possible takeover.

The Doncaster-born singer and lifelong fan is registered as a player for Rovers and played for their reserve team in February.

He has linked up with former chairman Ryan to launch a buy-out of the club, who were relegated to Sky Bet League 1 last season.

Riga named Blackpool manager

Blackpool have confirmed the appointment of Belgian Jose Riga as their new manager.

The 56-year-old, who saved Charlton from relegation from the Sky Bet Championship last season, agreed a contract in principle with the club’s chairman Karl Oyston last week.

Riga has now signed a one-year rolling contract to succeed former caretaker player-manager Barry Ferguson at Bloomfield Road.

He said: “I had a good discussion with the chairman and we found an agreement. I’m ready for the big challenge.

“It’s not an easy challenge. I’m sure that with the support of the chairman and certainly the support of the fans – who really must be our twelfth man – I’m sure we can succeed.

“First of all, I will work hard to build a consistent team. They know the way I like to play but first of all we have to look for efficiency. The only promise I can make – which I’ve done everywhere – is to give all I can give to the club.”

Riga, a former technical director at AC Milan, took over from sacked Charlton boss Chris Powell in March, charged with keeping them in the second tier despite sitting bottom of the division.

He won seven of his 16 games in charge and took them to an 18th-place finish, seven points clear of the drop zone, before leaving the club at the end of his temporary contract.

Riga has had two spells in charge of Standard Liege, who share the same owner as Charlton.

In his second stint during the 2011-12 season, Riga guided them to the last 16 of the Europa League before finishing fourth in the Belgian top flight.

Apart from his spells with Liege, he has also worked as a scout and analyst for the Belgian national team, spent time with the Aspire Academy in Qatar, and was invited by Jose Mourinho to spend a week training the Real Madrid squad in 2011.

Blackpool finished 20th in the Championship last season, after sacking Paul Ince in January, just two points above the relegation places.

Forest waiting on Veldwijk

Nottingham Forest are hoping to negotiate ‘one or two technical issues’ and complete a deal for Lars Veldwijk.

A fee has been agreed for the Excelsior striker and he has visited the City Ground to discuss personal terms and undergo a medical.

The towering frontman has, however, returned to Holland after requesting time in which to mull over a move.

Forest coach Brian Eastick remains optimistic regarding the chances of a switch being pushed through, but concedes that there are a few hurdles to be overcome before the 22-year-old’s signature can be secured.

He told the Nottingham Evening Post: “There are one or two technical issues that we hope will be resolved in the next 24 hours.

“If it does not go through, it will not be the fault of anyone at Nottingham Forest.”

If Veldwijk signs, he would become the second attacking addition at Forest following the arrival of Matty Fryatt on a free transfer at the end of his contract at Hull City.

“There was some fierce competition for his signature, so everyone is delighted he put pen to paper with us.”

Incoming manager Stuart Pearce is yet to officially take the reins on Trentside, with his deal due to start on July 1, but Eastick admits he has made the acquisition of more firepower a top priority.

He added: “It is fair to say that it is a position we knew we wanted to strengthen.

“If you look at the teams who went up last season, at Leicester and Burnley, they had players who were a threat and were prepared to run in behind.

“Most importantly, they had players who were able to score goals. It is an area where every manager likes to have a strong selection of players.

“We have one very good one coming in (Fryatt) to compete with the ones we have already got, and hopefully there will still be another one coming in.”

Eastick believes Forest have pulled off quite a coup in landing former Leicester City frontman Fryatt – a player the club have been chasing for some time.

He said: “There was some fierce competition for his signature, so everyone is delighted he put pen to paper with us.

“It was probably the prospect of first-team football that lured him here. There was a lot of challenging competition for him at Hull City, he would perhaps hope that he would spend more minutes playing for us than he would with them in the Premier League.

“But there were quite a few good quality Championship clubs who were also trying to get his signature.

“He has moved for very good fees in the past, so to get him on a free transfer has to be considered a very good signing for us.”

Crewe would like Bailey back

Crewe Alexandra boss Steve Davis admits he would be keen on bringing James Bailey back to the club when his Derby County contract expires.

The 25-year-old is due to become a free agent this summer after failing to secure fresh terms at Derby and that has opened the door to a possible return to Crewe, the club that helped to launch his career.

Bailey is a product of the Alex’s famed academy system and spent three years in their first-team set-up before stepping up the ladder to join Derby in 2010.

After making a bright start to life with the Sky Bet Championship side, the versatile midfielder began to slip down the pecking order and spent time on loan at Coventry City in 2012/13.

He is now looking to make a fresh start and reignite his career, and Davis would be happy to offer him the opportunity to do that in familiar surroundings if there is a deal to be done.

He said: “I am aware that we have been linked with James Bailey and I have never been against bringing former players back to the club.

“It would be like any other player. If they are better than what we have, then we would do it and he has arguably been better than what we have had.

“I wouldn’t say he was on our radar as such, but I wouldn’t bet against it.

“Sometimes, a player needs to take a step back to get his career going again and there is no better place than where it all started for him here.

“Much would depend on him and his hunger to get himself going again but we know he is a good player and could do a job for us.

“He didn’t play too much at Derby last season, but he did well on loan at Coventry at this level.”

Elphick: No need to leave

Tommy Elphick is confident Bournemouth can achieve ‘great things’ if they can keep the bulk of their squad together this summer.

Eddie Howe’s men only stepped up into the second tier at the start of the 2013/14 campaign, but ended the season within touching distance of the play-off places and a shot at the Premier League.

Building on that success with a limited budget will be no easy task, with the Sky Bet Championship renowned for being a fiercely competitive division.

There is, however, a feeling at Bournemouth that they can continue to hold their own and take positive strides forward.

Keeping key men will be crucial if they are to remain on the right track, with Lewis Grabban having already left for Norwich City and speculation linking the likes of Steve Cook, Eunan O’Kane and Matt Ritchie with moves up the ladder.

Bournemouth maintain that they are under no pressure to sell, though, and club captain Elphick hopes those attracting attention will realise that they are already part of an ambitious project.

“Our players attracting interest is a good thing, it shows we are doing something right as a team and how far we have come under the guidance of the manager.”

He told the Daily Echo: “Grabbs will be hard to replace, but I don’t think the manager would let him go without an idea of how to fill the void. We have a lot of great strikers and it is a big chance for players to step up and produce.

“It was a great deal for all parties. Grabbs gets to play for another big club and the money might give us the chance to add to what we have.

“Our players attracting interest is a good thing, it shows we are doing something right as a team and how far we have come under the guidance of the manager.

“We have all benefited from the investment and work the club has put into us all, and that’s only going to continue because neither the manager nor the owner wants to stop.

“Everyone wants to make that leap into the Premier League and once players get to the age of 25 or 26, they want to be doing it now.

“Some can get a bit jittery if they are at a club which isn’t moving forward or if they aren’t getting the rewards they deserve, but everyone here is.

“We’re taking a different path to some of the bigger players but if we can just stick it out for another season or two, then I believe we can get there.

“If we can keep the core of this squad together, then I am convinced that great things can be achieved.”

Birmingham return for Thomas

Striker Wes Thomas has signed a two-year contract with Sky Bet Championship side Birmingham City.

Thomas enjoyed a successful loan spell with the Blues towards the end of the 2012-13 season, scoring three goals in 11 appearances of which only five were starts.

The 27-year-old started his career in non-league football before joining Cheltenham in 2010, where he enjoyed his most prolific spell, scoring 18 goals in 41 league appearances.

Since then, Thomas has spent time at Crawley and Bournemouth, from where he went out on loan to Portsmouth and Blackpool before his stint with Birmingham.

Most recently he was with Rotherham, where he was part of the side that secured promotion to the Championship via the League One playoffs.

He scored six goals in appearances for the Millers who will now be among his opponents next season.
