The Edo Police command has said that it has arrested 12 people in connection of the attack that took place in the legislative quarters on Saturday.
The Edo State Commissioner of Police, Folunso Adebanjo disclosed this while speaking with Naija Center News on phone on Monday morning. He said that one of the buses the thug used was also recovered.
Responding to the statement made by the Edo State governor, Adams Aliu Oshiomhole, the CP dismissed the accusation that the police is supporting the Peoples Democratic Parties in the state. He said that as the police, the APC and the PDP always accuse the force if things do not favour them.
He assured that the police would do everything to bring the attackers to book. and warned that politicians should desist from sponsoring violence.
He said “What the governor said is not true, we are the police, we are neither APC nor PDP. the PDP accuse us so is the APC if things do not go their ways”
12 people have been arrested in connection of the Saturday attack, and the investigation is still going on. We also recovered a Hilux bus used by the thugs”
The Commissioner who seems to avoid commenting on the statement made by the governor said that Oshiomhole is the governor and i he didn’t think he has a hand in whatever is going on as widely speculated by the opposition party.
Adebanjo has earlier released a statement. He said : “Throughout last night (Saturday) we were going round and today (Sunday) we will continue. The state police command has observed with concern an upsurge in politically motivated violence in the state, particularly in Benin City. This does not augur well for peace and tranquility in the state as we march towards the 2015 general elections.
“The state command is hereby making it categorically clear that activities of hoodlums and miscreants geared towards disturbing the peace of the state will not be tolerated. Political gladiators are warned to stop sponsoring thuggery in the state. The police will not fold their arms and allow a break down of law and order. Henceforth, anybody caught sponsoring or taking part in any act of thuggery will be dealt with decisively according to the laws of the land. Political actors are advised not to take laws into their hands but to seek redress through the court system on matters of disagreement between them.
“Edo people are advised to go about their lawful business without fear of molestation. They are hereby encouraged to report activities of political thugs and their sponsors that are likely to disturb the relative peace that is being enjoyed in the state right now.”
Governor Oshiomhole had accused the CP in a statement on Saturday that the police contributed to the attack as they were informed at bout 10pm about the attack but intentionally remove securities to pave way for the PDP thugs.
Reacting to the accusation that PDP carried out the attack, the Edo State chairman, Chief Dan Orbih “There is no truth whatsoever in the governor’s allegations that we organized thugs to disrupt the President’s visit and even the House of Assembly quarters. After welcoming Mr. President to Edo State on Friday, many of us went to our homes, had a light dinner and went to bed. It is common knowledge that what happened at the Assembly quarters may have been borne out of the attack on Mr. Rasaq Momoh, a PDP lawmaker and the fact that those accused are still free. What happened was not the work of our party. We believe in the law enforcement agencies to deal with the situation. The APC has perfected plans to eliminate PDP leaders in Edo State over the attack in the Assembly quarters.”
He expressed disappointment that the governor has not till date condemned the attack on a PDP legislator days after the attack.
