Drivers attack DSS official in Ekiti

Irate drivers at Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti on Friday attacked an operative of the Directorate of State Service (name witheld) and beat him silly for allegedly interfering in their protest.

Trouble started following a disagreement between the students of EKSU and Akoto drivers designated vehicles plying the institution over the number of passengers on a seat.

The students were said to have protested that the drivers reduce the number of passengers on a seat to its normal three from four that they had started carrying.

The disagreement escalated into a free-for-all and caused traffic gridlock from Bawa Area of Ado Ekiti.

An eyewitness said some of the drivers carried clubs, cudgels and sharp objects to scare passengers and motorists plying the road.

They also forced motorists to discharge students of the institution.

The situation took a more violent trend as the DSS official was attacked.

His clothes were torn to shreds and in the process sustained bruises, cuts and blood stains on his body when the reporters met him.

“I was punched, clubbed, stoned by the drivers and if not for the timely intervention of another colleague who fortunately came to the scene and shot in the air severally to scare the mob away, it would have been worse, ” he said.

Officials of the DSS, Policemen and some top officials of the  EKSU later visited the scene to restore peace in the area.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Albert Adeyemi, could not be reached for comments.

But a police source said it was the DSS official who courted trouble by challenging the drivers.

“He shot into the air four times and in the process heightened the tension.”

Meanwhile, the students have vowed to ensure that the drivers comply with the regulation of only three people on a seat.

Ekiti: Take your audio clip to Tribunal - Adeyeye challenges APC

Ado Ekiti—Minister of State for Works, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, has challenged the All Progressives Congress, APC, to tender the newly released audio clip at the tribunal as an evidence if it was so sure of its facts.

The minister, who described the alleged audio clip as a technological manipulation which cannot stand the test of time, said in a statement in Ado Ekiti, yesterday, that Governor Ayodele Fayose did not hold meetings on how to manipulate the election with anyone.

He said: “The APC people know where to go if they have evidence that the election was rigged.

“It is foolish for anyone to be crying that an election was rigged eight months after the election was held. This is more so that there was an election petition tribunal where the evidence ought to have been presented.

“No amount of campaign of calumny and blackmail can erase the fact that Ekiti people willingly elected Governor Fayose. APC is only chasing shadows having admitted earlier that Ekiti people indeed voted for Fayose but they did so because he gave them rice.”

Adeyeye said it was amusing that the same people who castigated Ekiti people for voting Fayose because of “stomach infrastructure,” are now saying that the election was rigged.

He said it was the APC that actually plotted to manipulate the election, using Information Technology and thuggery, but the heavy presence of the military foiled the plans.

Faulting the audio clip, Adeyeye said: “In this age of Information Technology, it is possible to even manipulate videos not to talk of audio. It is possible to make someone who cannot speak French to appear on video speaking French.

“It is also possible for the voice of someone who died 10 years ago to be manipulated such that he will appear as speaking on current issues. GSM providers are doing it by making one’s voice to appear like that of a celebrity.

“Therefore, APC should take their so-called audio clip to court where it will be subjected to proper scrutiny both legally and technologically rather than using the media to promote a dead issue.”

Declare what you left in government treasury - Fayose challenges Fayemi

Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has challenged his predecessor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, to declare what he left in the treasury after his four year tenure ended on October 16, 2014.

He was reacting to comments made by Fayemi on Ondo State-based radio station, ADABA 88.9 FM, on Friday.

Fayemi had refuted Fayose’s claim that he (Fayose) left N10. 4 billion in the government coffers shortly after he was impeached from office in October 2006.

He disclosed that available records showed that Fayose left N3.5 billion and a lot of contractor obligations behind after his dramatic ouster from power in 2006.

Fayemi also revealed that actual cost of the new Government House otherwise known as the Ayoba Villa was N2.1 billion, adding that it was lower than other newly-constructed Government Houses in other states.

But Fayose, according to a statement by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, said since Fayemi had admitted that Fayose left N3.5 billion in the State treasury when he left office in 2006 and not N10.4 billion as claimed by Fayose, he should also be honest enough to tell the whole world how much he left in the treasury.

Olayinka said, “It is funny that Fayemi is embarking on campaign six months after he was defeated in the entire 16 local councils in the State, including his own local council.

“In as much as we do not want to join issues with Fayemi, because we know that he is still in psychological pain and trauma, having lost the opportunity of occupying the aristocratic N3.3 billion Oke Ayoba Government House that he used borrowed fund to build, we must tell him that he should desist from his life of one day, one lie, because Ekiti people can no longer be deceived by his tales.

“It is funny that Fayemi lied to Ekiti people before he assumed office; claiming to be friend of President Barrack Obama, lied for four years as governor and he is still lying, six months after Ekiti people chased him out of office with their votes.”

Olayinka said Fayemi’s claim that he had paid all contractors, including the one handling Ado-Iworoko-Ifaki road was illogical.

“If Fayemi had paid the contractor handling Ado-Iworoko-Ifaki road as he claimed, why was the troubled spot in front of the State Hospital not fixed? And why didn’t Fayemi himself arrest the contractor for refusing to move to site?

“It is on record that apart from debt of over N86 billion, with which Fayemi mortgaged Ekiti State till year 2020, August and September salaries of workers were left unpaid, four months deductions for workers Cooperative Societies and Union Dues were not remitted while pension and gratuity were not paid.”

Olayinka restated that as at the time Fayemi was leaving, Ekiti State Government was indebted to the tune of N86 billion.

He concluded that Fayose will not be distracted by the ranting of Fayemi and his party.

Seven Ekiti PDP lawmakers ‘impeach’ Speaker

The seven members of the Ekiti House of Assembly, who are PDP members, have impeached the Speaker of the assembly, Dr Adewale Omirin.

The impeachment of Omirin was carried out on Thursday in the same manner the seven lawmakers sat in controversial circumstances, and heavy police presence on Monday to approve the commissioner nominees and local government caretaker committees sent to the House by Governor Ayodele Fayose.

In Omirin’s place, the lawmakers elected Dele Olugbemi as the new speaker. Olugbemi was also appointed as the Protem Speaker on Monday.
