Saraki stalls trial, tribunal adjourns till March 18

Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, succeeded in stopping  his trial on charges of false assets declaration before the Code of Conduct Tribunal from taking off on Friday.

The trial was scheduled to commence on Friday, but Saraki’s new lead counsel, Chief Kanu Agabi (SAN)‎, informed the Danladi Umar-led tribunal that he had filed a motion which he said must be heard before trial could commence.

But the lead prosecuting counsel, Mr. Rotimi Jacobs (SAN), described the motion as “a deliberate attempt to stop the trial from going on”.

“The defendant keeps saying that there is no case against him and that he is being persecuted. Why doesn’t he let the trial start so that the whole world can see the persecution?” Jacobs asked.

The prosecutor, who said he had not been served with the motion, insisted that by virtue of the judgment of the Supreme Court delivered on February 5 which validated the trial, the day’s business was for the prosecution to open  its case.

He added that by virtue of section 396 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015, even if the motion was heard, ruling on it could only be delivered along with the judgment in the case.

‎But Agabi, who apologised for the erroneous service of his motion on the Federal Ministry of Justice instead of the prosecution, said since his motion was challenging the jurisdiction of the tribunal, it must be heard before going into the substantive case.

Jacobs later accepted service of the motion in open court and the tribunal chairman resolved that the two parties should exchange other processes in relation to the motion before March 18‎.

The tribunal fixed March 18 for the hearing of the motion, adding that ruling on it would be deferred and trial would commence on the same day.

‎Saraki, was accompanied to the Friday’s proceedings by about 40 senators.

Some of the prominent senators who were at the tribunal included, Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, Stella Oduah, Danjuma Goje, Samuel Anyanwu, Tayo Alasoadura, Ben Bruce, Shehu Sani, Hope Uzodima and Dino Melaye.

In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Peter Okhiria, the Governor said “Our attention has been drawn to the unprovoked verbal assault launched by one Senator Dino Melaye on the Governor of Edo State, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, while making a contribution on the floor of the Senate on the need to patronize made-in-Nigeria goods.

As a “nephew” of the Governor and members of the same party, we expected Senator Melaye to tender an unreserved public apology to the Comrade Governor, to no avail.

It is an open secret that Senator Melaye cannot maintain a decent matrimonial home hence he could descend to this pedestrian level of using the hallowed chambers to “cargorise” women as if they were pieces of items for purchase. Any responsible individual that is truly worth to be called a Senator, a position that convokes respect, decorum and decent public conduct, should know the limits of his verbal diarrhea. The liberty of free speech guaranteed in the hallowed chambers does not impose lunacy on anyone to disparage other Nigerians, let alone pry into their matrimony in a very derisive manner. We had intended to ignore this uncomplimentary comment as one of the several empty displays of the Senator, but the fact that it tends to reduce women to pieces of tissue calls for this response.

As we probed into Dino Melaye’s humanity, we were reminded that he is a man known for his vainglorious rodomontade and the childish display of his ostentatious lifestyle complements his love for foreign items. Many of such euro-centric mentality he has persistently displayed on social media, to underscore his materialistic eccentricity, hence his dialectical opposition to made-in-Nigeria goods. But an attempt at making women wear the garb of goods to be picked off the shelves was to take the issue to a ridiculous and irresponsible level.

By delving into the private affair and marriage of the Comrade Governor, Senator Melaye has exposed himself as a simpleton and a court jester whose words and tactlessness cannot be taken seriously by matured people.

We advise that Melaye should mend his ways with his ex-wife and concubines before coming to the village square to display his crass ignorance and emptiness to the Nigerian people.

If he has anything to offer, Dino Melaye should concentrate on making good laws for the people of Nigeria rather than descend to a ridiculous level, thus displaying to the whole world his unworthiness to sit in the hallowed chambers of the Nigerian Senate.

The Chairman, Senate Committee on the Federal Capital Territory, Senator Dino Melaye, mocked the Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, on Wednesday, while contributing to a motion seeking the need to patronise products made in Nigeria.

Melaye, who is from Kogi-West senatorial district, while contributing to the motion by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, which advocated the need to patronise products made in Nigeria, took a swipe at Oshiomhole, saying Nigerians should not emulate the governor whom he said opted not to “patronise ‘Made-in-Nigeria women’ but a foreign one”.

Melaye was referring to Iara, the wife of Oshiomhole, whom he married from Cape Verde in the Southern African region.

He, therefore, advised Nigerians not to only patronise goods made in Nigeria, but also made-in-Nigeria women.

He said, “I want to celebrate the ‘Made-in-Nigeria senator’ for bringing up this motion. In considering goods produced in Nigeria, we must look at the enabling factors that will necessitate the goods.

“It is beyond having one made in Nigeria attire and having over 70 designers’ attires in your wardrobe. We must reduce the allocation for made-in-Nigeria goods and services to the basics.

“What are those factors limiting the production of these goods? We must tackle them. We must also begin to look at our legislation, then we will begin to talk about made-in-Nigeria goods.

“We will also move in order to encourage made-in-Nigeria products and begin to talk about made-in-Nigeria women.

“Apologies to my uncle, the Governor of Edo State, we must as a people stop paying dowries in dollars and pounds. It is time for my colleagues here to become born again.”

Corruption: Obasanjo inflated rail contract by $10m per km - Chinese Firm

The Project Manager of a Chinese civil engineering and construction company, Etim Abak, on Monday told the Senate Committee on the Federal Capital Territory that former President Olusegun Obasanjo awarded the Abuja Rail Project in 2007 without an engineering design or a Memorandum of Understanding.

The Minister of FCT and current governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, allegedly signed the $841.645,898m contract based on an uncalculated estimate.

The committee was also told that the contract, which was for 60.67-kilometre rail project, was inflated by $10m per km and that the length was later reduced to 45km without refund of the cost for the 15.67 km that was dropped off from the project.

The Senate committee, led by Dino Melaye, who were at the site of the project to carry out oversight functions, therefore, demanded the refund of $195,878,296.74 being the amount for the 15.67km that was cut out, from the Chinese firm handling the project.

Abak told senators that the contract was signed by the then FCT minister without design and MoU, and that it was carried out based on conceptual design.

Abak said, “The contract was awarded based on conceptual design and estimates were not properly done. There was no formal design submitted and rail bridges and crossover bridges were not captured in the contract.”

Melaye said his findings revealed that the rail project was inflated by over $10m per km and wondered why such an act was perpetrated by the handlers of the project.

The senator added that the contract sum was $841.645,898m and that the project completion period was 48 months while the scope of work was 60.67km standard gauge, with double railway tracks and associated permanent way within the FCT.

He wondered why the 60.67km project was later reduced to 45. 245km without reduction in its cost.

He said, “Now, you have reduced the length of the standard gauge from 60.67km to 45.245km, meanwhile, there is no concomitant reduction if you juxtapose the length in kilometres and the reduction in terms of the cost.

“If we are to spend $841m for 60.67km and now you have reduced to 45.245km and the only reduction in terms of monetary value is from $841.6m to $823m and with a reduction of just about $17m, that to me is not commensurate to the reduction in terms of length.

“The Federal Government has so far invested N31.5bn and another N7.6bn from the SURE-P fund and if you put these together, we have altogether N39.1bn invested in the rail project, leaving the balance of N113. 233,155.32.

“The N3bn proposed in the 2016 national budget for the FCT was for the rail project. If you look at this, I would want to say that I did a personal research and looked at rail construction of the same specifics, of the same technology across the globe and one cannot but complain that the cost of railway project in Nigeria is on a very high side.”

He wondered why it was costing the Federal Government so much to construct a railway of just 45 km unlike the construction of the same specifics across the globe.

He questioned the rationale behind the government’s loan of $500m from Exim Bank of China for the project, saying that the money which the Federal Government had so far injected into the project was enough to execute the entire project.

He said, “From my own calculation, in fact, from my comparison with other rail projects across the world, the Federal Government investment in this project is enough to execute the project without taking a loan as high as $500m from China.

“From our research and it’s very simple, the world is now a global village. As you are sitting here now, on your phone you can google, even in India and Egypt.

“Fortunately, one of those projects in Zambia was also done by this same company, CCE. We have six countries and the average cost per km, none is above $4m per km. Why is the Nigerian project costing $13.8m approximately $14m?”

The senator representing Kogi-West, Mr. Dino Melaye, on Wednesday, said the deceased candidate of the All Progressives Congress in the Kogi State 2015 governorship election, Prince Abubakar Audu, was innocent of the allegation of misappropriation of public funds levelled against him.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission had on March 18, 2013 arraigned Audu, who was a governor of the state, before an Abuja High Court on 36 counts bordering on criminal breach of trust and misappropriation of public funds to the tune of N10, 965,837,040.

Melaye, who spoke during a late show on the African Independent Television monitored by our correspondent, also described the allegations as a witch-hunt.

He said, “How can a man who received N17bn in less than four years steal N11bn? This was a man who paid pensioners, did not owe workers and carried out a big infrastructural development in the state. What has the EFCC been investigating since 2003? It is all politics. Audu never stole Kogi’s money. This was a man who built Kogi State University, Kogi State Polytechnic, Obajana Cement Factory and signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Dangote Cement. Audu built all the institutions that exist in the state today.”

Asked his opinion on the rumour that Audu was poisoned, Melaye said he would not say what he did not know.

Melaye added, ‘‘I cannot say he was poisoned. I will not say what I do not know. God is the only one who sees everything. I can only weep. For him, it was the end of a cycle.’’

According to him, the majority of politicians in Kogi are too elitist.

He said, “Audu was the only politician who was down to earth in Kogi State. I was his closest political associate. He loved his people. He was a friend of the downtrodden. It will be difficult for any other governor to connect with the people like Audu did. A man who was ready to listen to bean cake sellers and cobblers was a man to be taken seriously.’’

Oyegun, Dino Melaye others meet over ministerial screening

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, the party’s candidate in the Kogi State governorship election, Abubakar Audu, and the Chairman, Senate Committee on Information, Dino Melaye, on Monday met behind closed doors.

The agenda of the meeting which was held at the party’s headquarters, in Abuja, was not made public.

However, it was learnt that the forthcoming Kogi State governorship election and the screening of ministerial nominees scheduled to commence this week were discussed at the meeting.

It was also gathered that Audu who came moments after Dino, was in addition to seeking for the party’s support for his campaign efforts, also put in a word for the lawmaker who was his campaign manager, in 2011.

Melaye, a vocal supporter of the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, had in his interaction with the media last week, assured Nigerians that the screening of ministerial nominees sent to the Senate by President Muhammadu Buhari, would be “rigorous” adding that the era of “take a bow and go” was gone.

Some of the party leaders had interpreted this to mean that the Senate is preparing to either humiliate some of the nominees or make things difficult for them during the exercise.

In the light of the development, it was further learnt that Dino’s presence at the meeting was to further assure the party leadership that nothing of that sort was in the offing.

Another party source who pleaded anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to the media, said the forthcoming Tribunal judgment over the Kogi West Senatorial District election was also discussed.

Melaye, who arrived at the party secretariat at about 3.10pm, was later joined by Abubakar Audu at Odigie-Oyegun’s office about an hour later. The meeting lasted for close to two hours.

It was gathered that the meeting was convened at the behest of the former Kogi State governor, who felt the need to reconcile his ally with the party leadership, against the backdrop of mutual suspicion among the party leadership.

The party source said, “The former governor was here to put in a word for Melaye, you know the tribunal matter is still there and judgment is only a few days away.

“Also note that some of our leaders are not taking the “threat” to make things difficult for our nominees lightly. For now, the party leadership cannot meet with the Senate President for obvious reasons.”

In response to reporters’ inquiries about the meeting, Melaye said it had nothing to do with his case at the tribunal.

He said, “What has the party got to go with the tribunal case? This is my party’s national secretariat and I can come here anytime. As for the election petition, God go win.”

He declined to respond to further questions before entering his waiting vehicle. Odigie-Oyegun also did not entertain questions from reporters as his security details shielded reporters away from him.

Tribunal: INEC falsified result for Dino Melayde - Witness

LOKOJA—The result of Kogi West senatorial district election was falsified by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to favour Senator Dino Melaye, the candidate of All Progressives Congress, APC, the National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal heard yesterday.

Mr. Feinti Dada, who was the first witness called by Senator Smart Adeyemi, the candidate of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the election, said the poll was fraught with irregularities in 21 units of five wards in Lokoja Local Government Area of the state.

Dada was the agent of Senator Adeyemi in the election which INEC declared in favour of Senator Melaye.

Dada, who was first led in evidence by the petitioner’s counsel, Chief Lateef Fagbemi, said under cross examination by the respondent’s counsel, Francis Ani, that the result of the recount ordered by the tribunal showed that INEC recorded voided votes during the election in favour of Melaye.

Dada further told the tribunal that the APC never held a primary election before Melaye emerged as the candidate of the party, adding that some members of the APC went to court to challenge the emergence of Melaye as there was no primary.

He added that documentary evidence from INEC backed the claim that Melaye did not go through primary.

However, when counsel to INEC, Salako Adeolu, rose to cross examine the witness, Adeyemi’s counsel, Fagbemi, SAN, objected, arguing that since the commission withdrew its response to the petition, it should not cross examine Dada.

Fagbemi, who noted that INEC was given the opportunity to defend itself but chose to throw away the opportunity, prayed the tribunal not to allow the cross examination by INEC counsel.

But Salako told the court that since spurious and damaging allegations were levelled against the commission, he should be allowed to cross examine the witness, saying the only option available to the court was to strike out the petition.

The tribunal in its ruling, however, said as far as INEC was a party in the case, it had the right to cross examine the witness but could not call any witness on its own, since it (INEC) had withdrawn its response to the petitioner’s motion.

ABUJA – SENATOR Dino Melaye,Friday, explained that he followed Toyin, wife of the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, to the headquarters of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, last Tuesday because he wanted to know the level of culpability in the allegation against her by her petitioners.

Melaye, who is the Chairman, Senate Ad-hoc Committee on Media and Publicity, said he only went to the anti-graft office in his capacity as an independent investigator.

The lawmaker, who represents Kogi West Senatorial zone in the Senate, said in a press statement, in Abuja, that his explanation became necessary, following the barrage of attacks and criticisms he had so far received from his “brothers, sisters and fellow citizens” since Tuesday, when he was sighted accompanying Mrs Saraki to the headquarters of the commission in Abuja.

Melaye, who said he had no regrets nor apology to anyone for his action, debunked insinuations in some quarters that he may have been one of the beneficiaries of the contracts in which the former Kwara State First Lady was being accused of.

He said he had never executed any government’s contract, either at the local, state or federal government level in his life, and challenged anybody with evidence to the contrary to provide it.

Melaye, in the statement entitled: “Stand up for what you believe in regardless of the popularity or acceptance of your belief”, also revealed that his visit to the commission’s office along with the Senate President’s wife was a personal sacrifice aimed at preventing the commission from being compromised through influence by desperate politicians.

He said: “The invitation of Mrs. Toyin Saraki by the EFCC, however, is not a criminal indictment. I will not abandon my friend because of mere EFCC invitation. I also went there as a private investigator and an anti-corruption crusader to find out the extent of culpability of my sister and friend since she was not told the content of the petition against her before her appearance before the EFCC.

“My definition for friendship is he or she who walks in when others are walking out. If my father is invited by the EFCC, I will go there; if a prima face case is established against him, I will shout for his prosecution. So my great people, I have no regrets following my friend and sister to the EFCC. If you are my friend, you are my friend. I cannot control what my friends will do, but they remain my friends. I am not fighting corruption out of passion only, but because it is the Godly thing to do.”

Tribunal: Melaye accuses Tinubu of backing Adeyemi at court

The Senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District, Dino Melaye, on Sunday alleged that a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, had decided to offer support for Senator Smart Adeyemi, who is currently challenging his electoral victory at the Court of Appeal.

Melaye, an APC senator, told journalists in Abuja that Tinubu had contacted the immediate-past Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Mohammed Bello Adoke (SAN), to take over the legal battle on behalf of Adeyemi.

He also said that Adeyemi, on the request of Tinubu, had forwarded details of the suit to Adoke, asking him to look for a judge in the Court of Appeal that would offer assistance.

But Tinubu, in his reaction, had asked Melaye to look elsewhere for people to blackmail.

Tinubu, who spoke through his Media Adviser, Mr. Sunday Dare, said it was nothing but a “kitchen of malicious lies.”

Dare said, “This is another lie from their kitchen of malicious lies. They are all over the social and traditional media, spewing lies and planting stories. We are not about that. Nigerians are not as gullible as they think.

“He is aligned with people who want to kill the party, and we wish him luck, but they will not succeed because the party belongs to the Nigerian people.

“This blackmail, like other ones, will not work. It cannot stick. Adoke? Who is he? Tinubu cannot recall when last he saw him or even spoke with him. Dino should look elsewhere for people to blackmail.”

Melaye had claimed that he incurred the wrath of Tinubu after refusing to back down from supporting the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, during the recently concluded election of presiding officers of the 8th Senate.

But Melaye said he had no regret over his role, leading to the emergence of Saraki as the Senate President.

He said, “I have no regret supporting Senator Saraki and my electoral victory was ordained by God and not by man. Therefore, no mortal can reverse it. In God I trust, no matter how desperate they might be.

“I am privy to an electronic mail sent to Adoke by an Abuja-based senior editor who is close to Tinubu in which he forwarded the court papers filed by Smart Adeyemi at the tribunal to Adoke.

“In the said e-mail, Adoke was told to look for a trusted justice in the Court of Appeal who would be useful for Smart Adeyemi.”

It will be recalled that the Election Petition Tribunal in Lokoja had upheld the election of Melaye who was elected on the platform of the APC.

The tribunal had dismissed the petition filed by a former chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists and former chairman, Senate Committee on FCT, Adeyemi, because his lawyers filed their defence too late.

Delivering judgment in the suit, Chairman of the three-member tribunal, Justice Akon Ikpeme, described the petition by Adeyemi, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, as “incurably defective.”

ABUJA- CHAIRMAN, Chairman of Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission, RMAFC, Engr. Elias Mbam said yesterday that report on the N8.64 billion wardrobe allowance for Senators and Members of the House of Representatives as being over exaggerated.

This came as the just as the Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki read out riot act to government agencies that have not been remitting Federal Government revenue to the Federation account, warning that the government will no longer condone such mismanagement act.

Speaking yesterday when he paid a courtesy visit on the President of the Senate, Senator Bukola Saraki, the Earlier, the RMAFC Chairman disclosed that wardrobe allowance as spelt out by the Commission has been put at 25 percent of the basic salary which when broken down amounts to N506, 600 per legislator, per annum.

Mbam who noted that the agency has bern enjoying cordial relationship with the National Assembly, however called for continued working partnership with a view to enhancing their effectiveness, just as he advised that the agency operates a functional website where information concerning the day-to-day activities of the agency.

Meanwhile, President of the Senate, Senator Bukola Saraki while responding to the RMAFC boss, read out riot act to government agencies that have not been remitting Federal Government revenue to the Federation account, warning that the government will no longer condone such mismanagement act.

Senator Saraki who noted that non-compliance by agencies of government has brought major setback in the processes of governance, however reiterated the support of the Senate in bringing back justice to any erring agency that indulges in diverting government revenue to illegal channel adding, “Monetary revenue and allocation is a serious challenge to our economy. Though, diversification of economy is very important but is not an overnight issue. We must block every leakage in government revenue.

“We made campaign promises to Nigerians and we must fulfill all our pledges. It cannot be business as usual. We will do everything within our capacity to elevate the living standard of Nigerians.”

Senator Melaye said, “I stand solidly on what I earlier said about pay cut. There must be a pay cut to Senators and House of Representative members.

“You can’t be talking about change and this kind of money in this country now when people are hungry. We must be sacrificious. We must show Nigerians that we must sacrifice by allowing a pay cut.”

Mr. Femi Fani-Kayode’s stout defence of an alleged Boko Haram sponsor, as identified by the Jonathan Administration-appointed negotiator Stephen Davis, and his attempt to continue pointing accusing fingers at my party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), is hasty, indecent and unconscionable.

The last time I checked, Mr. Fani-Kayode was not a duly-constituted independent Commission of Inquiry to investigate the allegations by the Negotiator. One therefore wonders how he could so quickly exonerate any of those who were fingered by Dr. Davis purely on the basis of sheer sentiments, as well as unbridled hatred for the APC

What Mr. Fani-Kayode’s desperate moves have shown is that the earth-shaking revelation by President Jonathan’s Negotiator has unnerved his party, the PDP, and the Administration. It has shown the veracity of the saying that when you point one finger at someone, four others are pointing at you.

The sponsors of Boko Haram are right within the PDP, as alleged by Dr. Davis, who named former Borno Governor Ali Modu Sheriff and ”a former Chief of Army Staff who retired in January, rightly sacked by the President.” This has corroborated what the President had said that Boko Haram is right within his own Administration.

What one would expect from a government that is keen on finding the true sponsors of Boko Haram and ending the insurgency – instead of playing politics with it – is to support an independent inquiry into the allegation, instead of rushing to shoot it down and casting aspersion on the man who made the revelation on international television.

In the rush to discredit Dr. Davis, the Jonathan Administration and its attack dogs have forgotten that President Jonathan himself appointed the Australian to negotiate the release of the Chibok girls, who were abducted by Boko Haram. They have forgotten that if at all the Negotiator has any sympathy, it will be for President Jonathan who appointed him.

I am glad that the truth about Boko Haram’s sponsors has finally come out. I advise the Jonathan Administration to look inwards instead of unleashing attack dogs on Dr. Davis and sending spin doctors, some of whom will do anything to evade justice over the allegation they face on their own, to the media to try to change the narratives.

Those who planted Modu Sheriff in the APC so they can label the party a Boko Haram sponsor knew what they were doing. They knew his antecedents. And when the APC decided to frustrate Modu Sheriff and his likes out of the party, they should simply have embraced him and accept that they have finally been hoisted by their own petard.

Enough of the distracting finger-pointing by the likes of the loquacious and truth-twisting Mr. Fani-Kayode. The cat has been let out of the bag!

Dino Melaye"s second wife move out over domestic abuse

A member of the All Progressives Congress, also, the former member of the House of representatives now activist has revealed the ugly side of himself once again, this time, not to the government but to his alleged God sent second wife he married in December.

Tokunbo Fabiyi, Dino’s first wife moved out of her 10 years matrimonial home after complaining of physical abuse from her husband, Dino Melaye, an accusation he denied several times through his lawyer who alleged that Tokunbo was having several affairs with different men and prefer jewelry than her own family.

The former lawmaker revealed a picture of his new girlfriend few days after his wife moved out, an action that caused uproar among Nigerians. He married her in December, 2013.

The new wife, Alero Melaye who was treated with so much love and attention to prove to the world that he was a better husband has moved out of her new home over a similar accusation.

Alero complained that she could no longer take the constant domestic abuse. According to a close source, She has moved out twice before and this time seem to be her final decision.

Though Dino denied ever touching a woman, what makes this even more grievous is that Alero is five months pregnant.

LAGOS—SEVEN days after Nigeria attained 15 years of unbroken democratic rule, some legal practitioners and rights activists, yesterday, said there was nothing to celebrate and fingered pervasive corruption for the country’s retarded growth and development, lamenting that President Goodluck Jonathan was not prosecuting the anti-graft war seriously.

Those who shared this view are Professor Akin Ibidapo-Obe, Head, Department of Public Law, UNILAG; Mr. Dino Melaye; Mr. Monday Ubani, former Chairman, Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Ikeja Branch; Mr. Debo Adeniran, Executive Chairman, Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders; and Mr. Emeka Ugwuonye of Harvard Law School.

They spoke at an anti-corruption symposium organised by the Gani Fawehinmi Students’ Chambers at UNILAG, Lagos.

They said President Jonathan’s lack of political will to fight corruption and his failure to prosecute some of his aides indicted of corruption would spell doom for the development of the country, adding that it behooves on the citizenry to vote out corrupt leaders in the next general elections.

Speaking on the theme Corruption, Mis-gover-nance and Official Impunity: The Bane of Nigeria’s Socio-economic Development and Prospects, Melaye said: “I make bold to say that the government of Goodluck Jonathan is the most corrupt in Nigerian history.

“Impunity is operating at its highest level in the history of this country. This government is not fighting corruption, rather it’s romancing, massaging and housing corruption.”

On his part, Ubani said: “Fifteen years after return to civil rule, it is unfortunate we have not even got to the point of practicing true democracy because if we are practicing real democracy, most of the things our present crop of leaders do or say against the people will not be in place.

“Our electoral system must be one that allows for the triumph of the people’s will to ascertain who their leaders are. Here, there are a lot of electoral malpractices, violence and blood-letting.”

To Ugwuonye, “there is no doubt that the Nigerian citizenry have the onerous responsibility to hold government accountable.

“Though we claim to be in a democratic dispensation, we hear all the time of government making efforts to stop people from protesting.

“Therefore, there is an urgent need for people to come out and protest, seek and demand changes.”
