Sri Lankan gold smuggler arrested at Bandaranaike International airport

A 42-year old Sri Lankan have been arrested at the Bandaranaike International airport while attempting to smuggle gold.

The gold bars were hidden in his rectum.


His suspicious walking attracted an officer at the airport, according to a spokesman. Gold weighting 400g, worth about 2m rupees was smartly hidden in the suspect’s rectal cavity, according to BBC report.


The smuggler who is currently cooling his chest in the police custody claimed that he worked for a Sri Lankan government ministry, according to Sri Lankan news website the Nation.


 


Sri Lankan government has inensify effort to crack down gold smugglers and more than 70 people have been arrested this year for gold smuggling.


Many Sri Lankans gold smugglers take advantage of places like Dubai and Singapore where the precious metal is relatively cheap and where there are few restrictions, with the plan to sell it in India – the largest gold consumer in the world. India import duty for gold is high up to the tune of 10% for a 100g bar.
