The Inspector-General of Police, Solomon Arase, has set up a social media platform to enable members of the public to report incidents of police misconduct for appropriate investigation and action.
The platform would make use of telephone lines, text messaging, Twitter, Facebook, WhatsApp, Blackberry Messenger, emails, submission of web-based forms, and online chatroom where complaints of professional police misconduct could be reported by aggrieved Nigerians.
Already, the IG has dispatched a circular to all the state police commands and the Federal Capital Territory command informing them about the innovation which would be overseen by a newly created unit, Complaint Response Unit headed by CSP Abayomi Shogunle, the Deputy Force Public Relations Officer.
Shogunle told our correspondent on Wednesday that the CRU would ensure immediate and instant resolution of all complaints received from members of the public through the State Provost Marshal, Officers in-charge, State Intelligence Bureau and State Control Room.
He stated that 111 officers (three per state, and the FCT) had been trained to follow up on public complaints against policemen.
According to him, after a complaint is received, it would be forwarded to the appropriate police Department, Formation or Command for detailed investigation and necessary departmental action as prescribed by the relevant law, Police Acts and Regulations, Force Orders, IG Circulars and Force Administrative Instructions.
He explained that the call centre that would handle public complaints has been set up, adding that 25 officers who will run a 24-hour shift had been trained by a foreign development partner.
Shogunle said with the CRU, the quality of police service delivery would be improved, noting that victims of police misconduct were guaranteed protection and redress.
The CRU head stated that the online messaging platform would be available round the clock, insisting that every complaint against police officers would be verified, investigated and appropriate sanction meted out to the errant officer.
He said, “In embracing the advantages provided by modern day technology as being used by other Police Forces/Departments across the world, IG Solomon Arase has approved the establishment of a community-oriented complaint management system to be known as ‘Complaint Response Unit’ for the Nigeria Police Force.
“The CRU acting as #CustomerService point for NPF would deploy a multi-platform complaint reporting mechanism through which citizens’ concerns and queries regarding policing activities are addressed in real time. CRU activities is 24/7 including weekends and public holidays.”
