Soyinka faults centenary honours list

Nobel laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, yesterday lashed out at the Federal Government for including the late General Sani Abacha among those honoured to mark Nigeria’s Centenary celebration.

SOYINKA SOYINKA

He called the action of government as a disservice to the nation and a failure of a moral rigour that calls into question “the entire ethical landscape into which this nation has been forced by insensate leadership.”

In a statement entitled The Canonisation of Terror, the Nobel laureate said, “According generalized but false attributes to known killers and treasury robbers is a disservice to history and a desecration of memory. It also compromises the future.”

Soyinka, who was also listed as one of the awardees, added in statement to explain why he declined to accept his own award saying, “I reject my share of this national insult.”

The playwright said it was the same Abacha who “placed this nation under siege during an unrelenting reign of terror that is barely different from the current rampage of Boko Haram. It is this very psychopath that was recently canonised by the government of Goodluck Jonathan in commemoration of one hundred years of Nigerian trauma.”

He said it was also under the authority of the late Abacha, whom he called “a vicious usurper” that ” the lives of an elected president and his wife were snuffed out. Assassinations – including through bombs cynically ascribed to the opposition – became routine. Under that ruler, torture and other forms of barbarism were enthroned as the norm of governance. To round up, nine Nigerian citizens, including the writer and environmentalist Ken Saro-Wiwa, were hanged after a trial that was stomach- churning even by the most primitive standards of judicial trial, and in defiance of the intervention of world leadership.”

The Nobel laureate wondered why successive administrations have not had the courage to “wipe out” Abacha’s memory from Nigeria.

He observed: “One of the broadest avenues in the nation’s capital, Abuja, bears the name of General Sani Abacha. Successive governments have lacked the political courage to change this signpost – among several others – of national self degradation and wipe out the memory of the nation’s tormentor from daily encounter.

“Not even Ministers for the Federal Capital territory within whose portfolios rest such responsibilities, could muster the temerity to initiate the process and leave the rest to public approbation or repudiation. I urged the need of this purge on one such minister, and at least one Head of State. That minister promised, but that boast went the way of Nigerian electoral boast. The Head of State murmured something about the fear of offending ‘sensibilities’.”

He is of the view that the lack of will to do what is right tantamount to “moral cowardice and a doubling of victim trauma. When you proudly display certificates of a nation’s admission to the club of global pariahs, it is only a matter of time before you move to beatify them as saints and other paragons of human perfection. What the government of Goodluck Jonathan has done is to scoop up a century’s accumulated degeneracy in one preeminent symbol, then place it on a podium for the nation to admire, emulate and even – worship.”

He said he, like many Nigerians, he found it disgusting that the hospital to which victims of the recent attack on a school in Yobe by Boko Haram were rushed for treatment was named after Abacha.

His words: “The sheer weight of indignation and revulsion of most of Nigerian humanity at the recent Boko Haram atrocity in Yobe is most likely to have overwhelmed a tiny footnote to that outrage, small indeed, but of an inversely proportionate significance.

“This was the name of the hospital to which the survivors of the massacre were taken. That minute detail calls into question, in a gruesome but chastening way, the entire ethical landscape into which this nation has been forced by insensate leadership.

“It is an uncanny coincidence, one that I hope the new culture of ‘religious tourism’, spearheaded by none other than the nation’s president in his own person, may even come to recognize as a message from unseen forces.”

He added: “Such abandonment of moral rigour comes full circle sooner or later. The survivors of a plague known as Boko Haram, students in a place of enlightenment and moral instruction, are taken to a place of healing dedicated to an individual contagion – a murderer and thief of no redeeming quality known as Sani Abacha, one whose plunder is still being pursued all over the world and recovered piecemeal by international consortiums – at the behest of this same government which sees fit to place him on the nation’s Roll of Honour!

“I can think of nothing more grotesque and derisive of the lifetime struggle of several on this list, and their selfless services to humanity. It all fits. In this nation of portent readers, the coincidence should not be too difficult to decipher.”

But the Federal Government in the brochure at the awards ceremony said it decided to honour Gen Abacha for his unprecedented economic achievements.

Abacha, government claimed, oversaw an increase in the country’s foreign exchange reserves from $494 million in 1993 to $9.6 billion by the middle of 1997, reduced the external debt of Nigeria from $36 billion in 1993 to $27 billion in 1997.

It also credited him with ending all the controversial privatisation programmes of the Babangida administration, reducing the inflation rate of 54 per cent inherited from Babangida to 8.5 per cent between 1993 and 1998, while the nation’s primary commodity, oil was at an average of $9 per barrel.

Besides, he was said to have created the most comprehensive and realistic blueprint for Nigeria’s development through Vision 2010 committee chaired by his predecessor, Chief Ernest Shonekan.

Abacha’s widow, Maryam received the award.

Also present to receive their awards were former Presidents/Heads of State Olusegun Obasanjo, Yakubu Gowon, Shehu Shagari, Muhammadu Buhari, Ibrahim Babangida, Shonekan and Abusalami Abubakar

The past leaders received award for outstanding promoters of unity, patriotism and National Development.

Posthumously awards were given to the former Heads of State/ Presidents including Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, General Aguiyi Ironsi, Murtala Muhammed, General Abacha and Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.

Representatives also received awards for the late Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Sir Ahmadu Bello, Chief Anthony Enahoro and former Labour leader, Pa Michael Imoudu.

Presenting a book “The reforms that have transformed Nigeria, 2010-2013″ at the occasion, President Jonathan said it would not be fair not to apologise to Nigerians about the selection of Nigerians for the award.

He explained that it was difficult to select 100 people, saying that about 500 people are qualified for the award and that the government would look for a way to recognise them in future national occasions.

The families of the late Bashorun M.K.O.Abiola, the late Lagos lawyer, Chief Gani Fawehinmi and the late music icon, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti also rejected the posthumous awards earmarked for them.

Mr. Kola Abiola, eldest son of the late Chief Abiola said the award was ‘inappropriate’ while, Mr. Mohammed Fawehinmi said it would be morally wrong for the family to stand on the same podium with General Babangida to receive an award.

Babangida’s government, he alleged, serially subjected the Fawehinmi to torture and that it was during one of such ‘illegal and inhuman detentions’ that “our late father’s cell was sprayed with toxic substances while in Gashua prison in 1987. The cumulative effect of that dastardly action led to our father, a non- smoker, contracting lung cancer which eventually led to his death on September 5, 2009.”

The Anikulapo-Kuti family blamed government for destroying Fela’s ‘Kalakuta Republic’ and subjecting his late mother, Olufunmilayo Ransome-Kuti to inhuman treatment, which led to her death. (0)

Tension in Kwara ahead of Jonathan’s visit

Tension is building up in Kwara State ahead of tomorrow’s visit to the state by President Goodluck Jonathan with the All Progressives Congress (APC) accusing the police of arresting seven of its members on trumped up charges.

The Police have denied the allegation.

APC vs PDP APC vs PDP

The APC sees the planned visit of the President as insensitive, ill-timed and utterly inhumane, coming so soon after the Boko Haram attacks in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa States.

The party’s Interim Publicity Secretary in the state, Alhaji Sulyman Buhari, said the PDP should allow Jonathan enough time to mourn those tragedies first before coming to Kwara.

He said:”May we remind these insensitive politicians in the state and all those irrelevant politicians that he seeks to rehabilitate in the state that the saner thing to do by all patriotic Nigerians is to feel and act sober, draw the grief-stricken people together, share in their pains and attempt to restore hope in the almost hopeless situation that parts of the country have been thrown into.

“We therefore call on our peace- loving President to turn the request of these desperate politicians to further justify his well known position that no individual ambition worth the blood of a single Nigerian.”

But the Publicity Secretary, Caretaker Committee of the PDP in the state, Mohammed Alhassan, said the APC is shocked by the success of PDP’s outing in the state last week.

The PDP said: “Without doubt, the shock of unexpected large crowd of people witnessed on Sunday, 23rd February, 2014 at the PDP reception would for a long time continue to cause blood-ripples and nightmares in the camp of the APC in the state.

Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed called on politicians and their supporters to conduct themselves lawfully as well as avoid any action capable of disrupting the peace in Kwara.

In a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media, Dr. Muideen Akorede, Ahmed said: “Although the president is not on a state visit, we welcome him to our state of harmony.

“We will accord him all the courtesies and arrangements benefitting of his office.

“As a peace- loving administration, we urge all to keep the peace, be lawful and avoid any actions or utterances capable of rupturing our reputation for harmony.”

He added: “Regardless of political affiliation, our people must remain mindful of the rule of law and shun all actions that contravene the law, especially the maintenance of public order.”

The APC also accused the state police command of becoming agent of the PDP after allegedly arresting seven of its members being in possession of APC posters in Ilorin, the state capital.

The Interim Chairman of the APC in the state, Alhaji Ishola Balogun-Fulani asked the Inspector General of Police, Muhammed Abubakar to call the state Police Commissioner, Ambrose Aisabo to order.

Balogun-Fulani added that the police also invaded the premises of printer engaged by the party to produce street signposts and destroyed his equipment, carting away over 300 signposts of APC produced by the printer.

Said he: “As if that was not enough, the people engaged by party to erect these signposts after being manhandled they were arrested and detained in the police cell for doing their lawful job.

“The police command had gone to stop the APC members while erecting billboards; it also tampered with the street signposts of the party in all roads in the state leaving those of the PDP intact.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the party met all the required guidelines laid down by the Kwara State Signage and Advertisement Agency (KWASSA) regarding erection of billboards in any part of the state as that is the only agency that is empowered by the law to remove or stop erection in any part of the state.

“This police command in Kwara State has confirmed our initial position that the commissioner was posted here to intimidate our members, by his open partisanship apparently to satisfy his paymasters in Abuja and their cronies in the state.

When contacted the commissioner Mr. Ambrose Aisabo denied the allegations, claiming that the command only arrested the APC members because it had intelligence report that the party was planning to use its posters to deface those of the PDP, whose national leaders, including President Goodluck Jonathan, are on a visit to the state on Monday.

His words: “We had information that APC was planning to print several posters and use it to deface that of Mr .President and we went there and indeed we saw several thousands of posters that they had printed. We impounded them but the people explained to us they had no plan of defacing the posters of Mr. President and I now warned them and allowed them to go with their posters. I am not against anyone pasting posters but I am against when people use it to deface those of others because there is enough space for everybody; politics is a game of choice. I am not here for any party. And I even called the APC chairman to tell him what I have done, so it is not true that anyone has been detained because we have released all of them.” (0)

We Can’t Deliver East-West Road in 2014, Says Niger Delta Ministry

Supervising Minister for Niger Delta Ministry, Mr. Darius Ishaku, friday told Senate Committee on Niger Delta to perish thoughts of the completion of East – West Road in 2014.

Darius Ogunmade, Niger Delta Ministry Darius Ogunmade, Niger Delta Ministry

Ishaku who made this blunt statement while defending this year’s budget of the ministry in National Assembly, said earlier promise by immediate past Minister of Niger Delta, Elder Godsday Orubebe, that the project would be delivered in December was now a tall dream.

Orubebe had told the Senate Ad-hoc Committee on Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme (SURE-P) before his sack, that with N113 billion, the ministry would deliver the project in December.

However, Ishaku told Niger Delta Committee yesterday that with only N42 billion as total allocation to the ministry in 2014 budget, hope of its completion this year was like asking for the moon, adding that  nothing less than N111 billion would be required for the delivery as planned.

“You questioned the fact that we had earlier on promised that we would deliver this East – West Road by December 2014. I once again want to reiterate that we cannot complete it as earlier promised due to the funding gap. We had earlier on hoped that there would be some funding. In 2013, we had hoped that we would bridge the gap by getting more funds.

“We got some funding from SURE-P far more than the budgetary allocation. But it still was not as anticipated. We got some funding from (Agricultural Development Bank) ADB but it still was not as expected.  SURE-P funded us more than the first line budget. We still have some shortfall. And because of that shortfall, we will not be able to commission this project by December 2014 as earlier anticipated unless there is sufficient funding. And that funding has to come immediately and soonest because you are talking of the time of construction.

“It does not matter, the disbursement has to come much earlier than the completion. Particularly, we are talking about the Niger Delta region where the wet season lasts longer than the dry season. So, if you are giving me funds during the peak of the rainy season, it will still not be utilised until I get another dry season.

“Last year, it was N62 billion, the percentage disbursement was about 49 per cent. Now, we are on about N42 billion. That is about N20 billion less than last year’s and the release also is a problem. Our promise of completion by December was made based on last year’s budget and the budget we did last year, the release was 49 per cent.

“We are short of N111 billion. We have accessed N238 billion. N238 billion has been paid. I will give the details to the committee,” he submitted.

Responding, Chairman of the committee, Senator James Manager, regretted that funding of the ministry had continued to dwindle from year to year as he recalled that upon the creation of the ministry in 2008, N144 billion was allocated to it.

He however, lambasted the ministry for failing to commission a single project since its creation over five years ago as he called on every well meaning individual to come to the aid of the ministry with a view to getting the project completed without further delay.

“We have to do all we can to rescue the ministry because it is terribly underfunded. And don’t forget that this ministry was created as a child of necessity. That point must be emphasised so that we do not get back to where we are coming from. And therefore, whatever we are doing as far as this ministry is concerned, we must be serious minded.

“Therefore, you must appreciate the fact that the East – West Road is the flagship of the Niger Delta Ministry because it is very important to the region and Nigeria in general. So, we want to know the areas to assist the Ministry because when we do so, we are assisting Nigeria and the Niger Delta people,” he said. (0)

Right of Reply: The fuss that attends a party living out its slogan

Sir,

I have lived in Chicago for 36 years, of those years, I have campaigned for the first black Mayor of Chicago, late Harold Washington. He got me my first  job at WMAQ TV an NBC affiliate.  I Campaign for Jesse Jackson Sr., and many local politicians in my local community of Waukegan. I was elected vice chairwoman of Waukegan democratic party, I contested unsuccessfully for Alderman of the 9 ward in Waukegan. I was the first Nigerian in the Chicagoland area to run for public office. Within the Nigerian community I was twice elected financial secretary of the Nigerian National Alliance an umbrella organization for Nigerian organizations credited for fighting and winning dual citizenship for Nigerians

APC apc

In 2003 Obama approached us (the Nigerian Community) for help, being an African brother we decided to help him, back then many never heard of him. We register Africans for Obama organization to raise fund for him. Personally, I mobilized Lake County elected officials for a fund raiser for him three in Lake Count and two in Chicago. Assisted his campaign in opening a campaign office for him in North Chicago, all the campaign materials for Lake County initially were stored in my house. His first ever video “introducing Obama is still in my procession.I know Chicago Politics inside out.

I am saying all these to say that AKPD did not win election for Obama, Obama got what it took to win his Senate race and eventually the presidency. AKPD Message and Media  is a racist company; they fired all black people when they took control of Obama’s campaign. They made it impossible for blacks Americans including Nigerians to have access to Obama. Their insult to blacks was not limited to Chicagoans. During Obama’s Senate campaign,The Asantehene of Ghana publicist contacted me to arrange with the campaign for the Asantehene to meet with Obama, but the campaign disrespectfully turned him down but it was ok to parade Obama amongst white Jews.

It bring tears to my eyes that an African political party, could discriminate against fellow Africans to award a contract to a foreign firm while many of such firms ownedby Nigerians are all over the globe. After this news broke, I placed a phone call to AKPD Message and Media; I was told they are not running the campaign but producing a TV commercial for APC. What was APC thinking, what is so unique about the script, the equipment owned by AKPD Message and Media that Nollywood, black owned production companies, like Oprah (OWN) could not afford.

What is it about white people that make Africansin the mother land see themselves intellectually inferior?

Billions of Naira has been invested to educateus in foreign lands. It is those governments that are utilizing our expertiseto develop their countries. Thousands are without jobs in Nigeria, and you peoplekeep pouring money into white communities to create jobs for them while ourpeople go without, why are you people keep outsourcing your brains to the white,to think and do for you the simplest thing like conceiving a winning campaign strategy. Wake up my people, I love you, it is 2014.

Brazil, India, have experienced tremendous development since left Nigeria. But Nigeria is trekking backward every day. If the plan is to use AKPD Message and Media  to gain access to Obama, forget it, it won’t happen, the president would even frown at the fact that there are many Nigerian owned production companies but instead APKD is contracted.

The more things change the more they stay the same. I have been excited about APC, after this story broke, I have lost respect for APC.

Lagos Landlords Reduce Advance Rent Demand

An interesting development unfolding in the rental market in Lagos is that most landlords no longer demand multiple-year rent in advance. Nobody is sure if it is a response to the Lagos State Tenancy Law or whether they are just tired of lingering court cases on rent default, or if it is a desire for regular cash inflow, writes Bennett Oghifo

Lagos State Lagos State

House-hunting is becoming very interesting these days. Agents not only make offers but are also willing to introduce the prospective tenant to the landlord for further negotiations.

Better still, professional real estate surveyors now have a form that profiles the would-be tenant and this include the gross income.

The idea behind this research is obvious, said an Estate Surveyor and Valuer, Sam Adeniyi, explaining that “most landlords want to be able to vitualise the type of person that wants to rent their property. They want to be sure the person has a regular means of income to renew the rent when it is due or be willing to move out if he/she cannot renew the rent.”

Adeniyi said they have been advising landlords to reduce the demands made on prospective tenants because “from our experience, most people clean up their accounts and maybe borrow to meet the initial rent but the renewal takes some fight to get from them. We have several cases in court and this eats into our productive time whenever the cases come up. It is not worth the trouble.”

Another real estate surveyor, Emma Okei said the landlord of a property asked him if tenants could pay their rents every six months because he needed regular cash-flow. He explained that “the man said he does not have too many needs to spend bulk money on and that it was unreasonable to wait till the end of every year to collect money from his tenants. I told him he could and that I would inform the tenants.”

According to him, the demands of landlords were influenced by other landlords, saying “they compare notes, and some advise others to jerk-up their rents, regardless of the fact that they all do not have the same challenges to spend money on.”

Lagos Rent Law…

Discussing the new law after it came into effect, Afolabi Adedeji, an Engineer, like most people, said the laws that govern the economic forces of supply and demand, apply not just to consumer items, goods and services, but also to the need for residential accommodation, office space, market stalls, shopping plazas, car parking spaces, among others. Adedeji said: “In a situation where the available stock of Housing falls far short of the number of Lagosians with effective demand for residential accommodation, then the so-called ‘shylock’ landlords/landladies cannot but have a field-day, not forgetting middle-men and ‘quack’ agents.”

Laws and guidelines usually have their ‘spirit’ as well as their ‘letter(s)’, he said. “The Spirit of the rent control law in Lagos State is good and very welcome, but caution must be exercised in its implementation, so as not to create a black market if the letter of the law is unrealistic.”

Looking at the issue of possible sabotage by even desperate tenants, he said “An Oil Industry or Telecomm. Company Executive that has just been re-deployed to Lagos and whose Wife is heavily Pregnant, will not hesitate to say, oga landlord or mama landlady, please write N950,000 per annum in my receipt in accordance with the Lagos State rent edict, but here is N4,000,000.00 for two years rent in advance on a 3 – bedroom flat for me and my expectant wife in South-West Ikoyi, I am tired of staying in a hotel.”

Regardless, sometimes people require an official reason to act on what has been bothering them. For instance, landlords who have been under the influence of their peers to collect rents in advance of two to three years or more had an opportunity to ask for the rent they consider reasonable and for a maximum of a year’s rent or even six months in advance. “Some will like to collect monthly as it was in the past if they are sure the tenants can keep up,” said an agent, Dehinde Macaulay.

He said the Lagos Rent Law was a major reason some landlords have reduced their demands because most tenants now default and when they go to court or to arbitration, the tenants always win.

Macaulay said the tenants usually lived in the house for as long as the case is in court, adding “gone are those days when a landlord will get thugs to tear off the roof of the building to evict the tenant. That is even an offense now. So, landlords appeal to the tenants ahead of time if they do not want to renew their rents. Some give an option of not collecting the year’s rent and will give the tenants six months to look for alternative accommodation and sometimes the period is extended.”

When the rental law came into effect in 2011, it attracted harsh criticism from some people, who thought the government should have built homes for Lagos residents before attempting to control rents charged in buildings they did not build.

But, as things turned out, it is beginning to influence landlords’ behaviour towards the tenant and vice versa.

Government’s Housing Scheme…

In response to the issue of government building homes to accommodate Lagos residents, Governor Babatunde Fashola launched a unique home ownership scheme known as Lagos Homs.

The scheme is designed to curb homelessness and, on account of this, the government reached a decision that only first time home owners were eligible. “Only those who have not owned a home either acquired privately or built or bought from government will be eligible,” said Governor Fashola at the presentation of the scheme, recently.

People are expected to pay 30 per cent equity contribution and the rest paid over 10 years through mortgage loans, he said, adding “this is in accordance with laid down global practices, while the balance will be paid on a monthly basis over 10 years. The scheme is for everybody, whether you are a petty trader or a government worker or artisan. We already have trained mortgage counsellors, who will help people determine what they can afford.

Prospective homeowners, he said would take oath in this regard and that the consequence of making a false statement was that the home would be repossessed whenever information gets to the team that the homeowner lied about their status. “The board has a right to repossess the home even in the 10th year.”

He said only Lagos residents, who are tax payers, “not indigenes”, who must have stayed in the state for six months and must be registered as a residence of Lagos. (0)

Enugu PDP Dismisses Ex-Gov Nnamani"s Return to Party

Christopher Isiguzo

The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Agbani ward,    Nkanu local government area of Enugu state Saturday dismissed reports that former governor of the state, Senator Chimaraoke Nnamani has returned to the party.

Senator Chimaraoke Nnamani Senator Chimaraoke Nnamani

In a communiqué issued at the end  of their monthly ward meeting, the Agbani Ward executive of the party led by Nnamani Ndubuisi as acting Chairman, stated that the purported re-admission of Dr. Nnamani by the suspended ward chairman of the party, Monday Ngene was null and void and of no effect.

The communiqué dismissed as a sham, earlier meeting on February 27, 2014, in which Ngene and the former governor, with his supporters, stormed the ward office at Agbani in celebration of the former governor’s return to the party.

The ward executive maintained that the former governor did not follow   due process as he did not write to the ward secretary as required by the PDP constitution. They therefore insisted that Dr. Nnamani was still a chieftain of the People for Democratic Change (PDC), which he formed after he left PDP.

Obasanjo, Buhari, Others Express Joy About Centenary Awards

By Jaiyeola Andrews

Former Heads of state who were given centenary awards by President Goodluck Jonathan, reacted to the awards shortly after it was conferred on them late Friday.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo said the award “means Nigeria is making progress. If Nigeria survived the first 100 years, it means that Nigeria has come to stay.”

General Muhammadu Buhari on his part, said the award meant a lot to him to be qualified to be recognised by Nigerians, saying “my wish for Nigeria is security.”

For General Ibrahim Babangida, the award also  meant a lot to him, adding that ” most of us that were awarded today (Friday),,the younger generation should try to emulate us because they will survive their sources of inspiration and aspiration.” (0)
